We spent the past few days gathering as a team, highlighting wins, looking at opportunities, and growing together. #ILOImpact is about seeing what’s right in front of us and keeping a clear eye on the most distant horizons and expansive goals.
About us
ILO Group was built on a simple, shared mission: to roll up our sleeves and do whatever it takes to support K-12 system leaders’ big bets—from continuing to respond to student needs exacerbated by the pandemic to supporting all students thriving as we look ahead. We’re a proudly women-owned education strategy and policy firm. Our name, ILO Group, stands for In the Life Of: we work side-by-side with the country’s leading educators, experts, and government partners to help solve the toughest challenges facing school systems and leaders today–because we’ve been in their shoes. With decades of collective experience, our seasoned team of consultants has supported many of the nation’s largest and highest-profile school systems and education-focused organizations. At a time when education leaders are facing unprecedented and increasingly complex challenges—and the stakes have never been higher—we help them navigate, design, and implement policies and programs that accelerate student outcomes and reimagine our education system to better serve students.

In this year’s update to the Superintendent Research Project, we researched the race & ethnicity of superintendents currently leading the nation’s top 500 largest school districts. The data reflect a significant imbalance—just 14% are women of color. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dscBxZRr

Representation matters — especially in education. When school district leaders reflect the diverse communities they serve, it profoundly impacts students, families, and the entire school system. #RepresentationMatters #LeadingWithExcellence

The power and promise of #AI is making exponential gains seemingly overnight. This Axios piece from Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen observes that the most powerful #AI models may soon “operate with the intelligence of a legit PhD student as soon as next year.” Based on the work of our AiLO division, here are some important thoughts, cautions, and considerations. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eDBiuwMU #AI models with PhD-level creative and analytical capabilities could be a game changer across fields and applications. And at the same time there is a body of evidence that LLM models risk reinforcing bias in ways that may be both difficult to detect and harder to address. Read more on bias here: https://lnkd.in/eM3zFqpj That includes bias in how students are treated and depicted by #AI. For example, a recent study spotlighted the tendency of LLMs to associate “struggling” students with racialized-gender signifiers rather than without. And they do so with stunning regularity—“a thousand-fold magnitude in some contexts”. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ed9MXqVt Add to that the fact that new research shows that there’s a problematic gender gap in who is accessing AI. This gender gap in utilization threatens to exacerbate existing gaps like the staggering gender gaps among district leaders. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ecjjUDQz #AI is already transforming our schools and society. The upside is real, but so are the risks. At ILO Group through our AiLO division under the management of Laura Smith, we are advancing the safe, responsible, and strategic application of this transformative technology. Central to that work is a clear-eyed and intentional of bias that are very much in front of us. Learn more about AiLO here: https://lnkd.in/e9etYAc3

Excited to kick off the weekend at The Forum for Educational Leadership Alumni Summit, where we are exploring the transformative potential of AI in education! In this morning's workshop, we focused on how leaders can balance the risks and rewards of AI by prioritizing community engagement and setting up strong structures to support success. It was also a real treat to team up with Julia Rafal-Baer for this!
Day 2 is underway! Dr. Julia Rafal-Baer and Laura Smith are back exploring AI’s transformative impact on our society. Participants are engaged in planning and deepening their personal and professional understandings and usage, while exploring the ethical considerations around AI and approaches to mitigating risks while maximizing the benefits of #AI.
