📚 Daughter of CNN anchor Jake Tapper, Alice Paul Tapper created a children’s book, “Use Your Voice,” to raise awareness about the importance of advocating for yourself in healthcare, especially when it comes to diagnosing serious conditions like infections. In 2021, Alice became ill with symptoms including severe stomach pain, chills, and vomiting, which were initially dismissed as a viral infection. It wasn’t until she was hospitalized, and her father pushed for further testing, that doctors discovered she had a perforated appendix and consequently septic shock. Without this diagnosis, the outcome could have been tragic. Alice’s story is a vivid example of how a misdiagnosed infection can turn septic and therefore potentially deadly, if not identified and treated early. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, alongside Senators Susan Collins and Bob Casey have introduced the bipartisan SEPSIS Act! This groundbreaking legislation aims to reduce sepsis-related deaths by directing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to build on their ongoing efforts to reduce the burden of sepsis through the Hospital Sepsis Program Core Elements. The CDC’s work will include an education campaign about addressing #sepsis in hospitals; improving data collection on pediatric sepsis; sharing information with HHS on data collection, including CMS on sepsis quality measures, and development and implementation of a sepsis outcome measure. We recently shared news of actress Ashley Park talking about her bout of #septicshock earlier this year, stemming from tonsilitis. Shortly after, another actress, Real Housewives of Orange County star Vicki Gunvalson, opened up about her life-threatening battle with #sepsis. After being diagnosed and treated for a sinus infection, Gunvalson experienced stroke-like symptoms, amnesia and memory loss. Once admitted to hospital she was told she had severe sepsis from pneumonia and that her survival chances were just 10 to 20 percent. While she is recovering, her story is a powerful reminder of how dangerous infections can become, especially if not treated quickly. While Gunvalson’s experience happened right before Sepsis Awareness Month, in September, it reinforces the need for broad education and understanding of sepsis year-round so people affected can recognize early signs of sepsis early and seek immediate medical attention. #SepsisAwarenessMonth #SepsisAwareness #RHOC https://lnkd.in/eEyVjydH

The Global Sepsis Alliance (GSA) is at the forefront of the fight against sepsis, providing global leadership to reduce the burden of sepsis through awareness, prevention, and improved treatment. Did You Know? ▪ Sepsis is responsible for 1 in 5 deaths worldwide. ▪ Despite its severity, sepsis is preventable and treatable in many cases with early detection and timely intervention. ▪ The GSA, in collaboration with over 115 member organizations, works tirelessly to implement changes in how sepsis is prioritized, diagnosed, and treated globally. The GSA started World Sepsis Day in 2012 as a global movement to raise awareness about this deadly condition. Every year on September 13, events are held worldwide—from medical education sessions to community awareness campaigns—highlighting the importance of sepsis recognition and prevention. Each year, sepsis affects 1.7 million people and claims 350,000 lives in the U.S. alone. Sepsis is: - The leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals, with 80% of cases already in progress as patients arrive at the emergency department; - The #3 cause of death in the U.S., after heart disease and cancer;   - The #1 cost for U.S. hospitals, exceeding $62 billion annually. Preventing infections is the first step in preventing sepsis. Simple measures like handwashing, getting vaccinations, and timely treatment of infections can significantly reduce one’s risk.
