"You have to be very willing to say no, sometimes to customers. It's very hard as a founder, especially because in the early days, it's very important to say yes to everybody. As you scale and build out your product more, it's important to say no to some people so that you're super focused on one segment and you're building for them." - Akash Anand, CEO of Clueso (YC W23). Last night I attended a talk by Peter Walker (what an amazing person) hosted by Inkle.io, where he explained great concepts regarding VC funding to the early stage startup founders. He shared the trends of startup valuations, explained equity split between co founders, advisors and employees and dilution percentage with every investment round. Key takeaways from Peter’s talk, 1. Bootstrap your startup if you can, as you get all the company to yourself. 2. It’s a misconception that a solo founder cannot raise VC money. 3. VCs are more smart about investing in AI based startups. So if AI based startups are raising the highest money, it’s more competitive than ever now. 4. SF and overall Bay Area has the highest VC money as compared to anywhere in the world. 5. Pre-seed and seed funding rounds are the ones that takes maximum dilution of your company. So make sure you negotiate your terms pretty well before signing it. Being a technical founder, I had a lot of learning since I am naive in startup finance. I am glad I attended the talk and met great founders at the event. Ann Olinger Derek Gregg
