Listen in to the in/organic Podcast where we talk about all things inorganic and indirect growth strategy for SaaS!

About us

I’m Christian Hassold, host of the In/organic Podcast. I’ve spent 24 years building and leading SaaS companies. When my last company was acquired in 2017, I was presented with the opportunity to build the M&A function from scratch inside a $130 million public company. Though I had led or been a part of more than a dozen multi-million dollar inorganic and indirect growth drivers over my career, this opportunity brought conviction that I had found my new calling. Today, I lead corporate and business development for CommerceIQ, a Silicon Valley unicorn backed by Insight, Softbank, and Madrona Ventures. I also advise private equity investors on potential acquisitions in the commerce enablement space. On the In/organic Podcast, I open source my learnings on mergers and acquisitions, indirect partnerships, and international expansion to my listeners in hopes I can help those who follow me avoid common mistakes and double down on winning business development strategies that can accelerate growth and find the fastest path to the right outcome. Join me and my guests on this journey to be a tide that rises all the boats in hyper-growth SaaS companies.

👉 Inside one of 2024's Biggest Deals in the E-commerce Sector 👈 Commerce M&A has been muted in the last few quarters. Several sale processes have either stalled or been delayed by 1-2 quarters. The acquisition of SupplyPike by SPS Commerce is notable not only because of the implied multiple of 10x but also because this involves a small SaaS company in Arkansas. Not Silicon Valley, Boston, or New York, but Walmart country! In this episode, I go deep into the deal specifics, process, what is means and why this was a great win for both companies. Enjoy, and give it a like or share! https://lnkd.in/eYCyVJ22

🤔 What goes on inside the mind of a serial founder?🤔 When approaching founders wearing my Corp Dev hat, part of the job is quickly establishing credibility by understanding what they care about and aligning interests. Better said, making what you care about relevant to them. In this episode of the In/Organic Podcast, was joined by Chad Rubin, co-founder of commerce ecosystem notables including Prosper Show, Skubana, an Extensiv Company, Sellers Choice, and more recently Profasee. We talked about his motivations and approach to building companies, how it's changed over time, and how he navigates the decision to sell. We also talked a bit about the evolution of #ecommerce and the never-ending greenfield of problems to solve for brands and online retailers. It's a great discussion, give it a listen and a like wherever you follow podcasts! https://lnkd.in/gkJ7yF8d

In this weeks episode of In/organic, we discuss: - What is Ecosystem Mapping? - Why is it valuable to think beyond the company universe around yours in terms of both competition and value creation? - How should a corporate development leader use the market mapping process to sort and prioritize M&A targets? - Count how many times the host mistakenly says the word "market map" when he means ecosystem map because podcasting is a challenge! 🤣 Listen in and enjoy! https://lnkd.in/eU6hcdDu

🚨 SaaS M&A Hiring Guidance is Here 👇 🚨 M&A in scaling SaaS companies is holding steady with at least 120 acquisitions per quarter per data tracked by Carta. M&A is a great way for SaaS companies to expand their reach into TAM, grow their share of wallet, or expand into new geographies. There are also a large pool of companies available to acquire. The challenge is the M&A strategy in scaling SaaS is all too often put at risk by hiring an inexperienced leader, not having any clear owner, or not setting the function up for success. In this episode of In/organic, I walk through what to expect from a SaaS M&A leader, the role of the broader executive team, and common hiring mistakes. Give it a listen and let me know what you think! https://lnkd.in/egrM6G5b

🤔 #1 Question from Founders and CEO's 🤔 I want to sell my company, should I hire a sellside banker or can I do it myself? A banker-led sale process takes a lot of work off the shoulders of the c-suite, but not necessarily responsibility for a great outcome. Sometimes it makes sense to take things into your own hands. In the most recent episode of In/organic I was joined by Jon Gregg, former President of Sellpoints which he successfully sold to Syndigo in 2019. In this episode, Jon shares his experience of running a do-it-yourself sale process from start to finish. It was a great conversation that touched on all of the typical questions I field when discussing the topics with founders and ceo's considering a company sale. Enjoy, like and share 😎 Thank you!! https://lnkd.in/dtjbR3A2

😭 At least 70% of #acquisitions fail 😭 Among the top reasons for failed M&A is a lack of cultural fit and a poorly run integration. Smaller SaaS companies often lack the resources and expertise to execute a post-merger integration, but that does not mean it can't be done well. In this episode of In/organic, I was joined by Mohammed Baloch, Head of Integrations at Gainsight, a #SaaS company backed by Vista Equity Partners. In this episode, we explore the key elements of a well run integration process and how to help where its needed in the right way. We also talk about the traits of walk-on players that can help lead #integration success. Give it a listen and a share 😁 https://lnkd.in/evWQvyKh

Truth: The ranks of M&A professionals are filled with walk-on players who previously had ZERO experience running an M&A function. This is because #SaaS #CEO's have a preference for appointing smart, inquisitive, and trustworthy people into the role versus bringing on stranger. BUT, what does good look like? What are the winning traits and things a walk on needs to know and do to drive the right outcomes? In this episode of In/organic, Loran Gutt shares his ten years worth of learnings after taking on a walk on role himself. Our discussion covers the winning traits of an corporate development head, what are the important partnerships to build within the business, what is a good baseline framework, and some cautionary advice. This is required listening for CEO's considering appointing a walk-on player, or someone who took on the role recently. Listen, like and share! https://lnkd.in/eZkRicn9

M&A was not out, but a little down in 2023, but I am predicting that it will rise substantially in 2024 - especially for the many thousands of SaaS companies that are low on cash and with limited funding options. If your a #SaaS #founder / CEO who is wondering whether 2024 is the right time to be on the market to buy or sell, this episode is for you! https://lnkd.in/eGeY86Ed
