We're excited to share that the NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub, of which the University of Rochester is a lead partner, was selected as one of only 12 national Tech Hub award winners and is receiving $40 million in funding from the US Economic Development Administration to elevate the burgeoning semiconductor industry in Upstate New York. “I firmly believe that no region has more momentum as a center for innovation-led growth, and this funding will enable us to leverage our collective strengths and assets to build an ever-better future together as a global leader in semiconductor research and manufacturing," says University President Sarah Mangelsdorf. The NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub spans the Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse region and has engaged more than 100 institutions, assembling commitments from industry, academia, labor, non-profit, government, and other private sector members. Senator Chuck Schumer was in Rochester for the announcement, celebrating this prestigious federal Tech Hub designation and funding established in the landmark CHIPS and Science Act. Last week, the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics buzzed with energy as we concluded our 2024 Photon Camp, which brought local high school students together for an immersive week of learning and exploration in optics. We are deeply grateful to each and every person who contributed their time and effort to make this week a success. The highlight of the week was Friday’s poster session, during which students showcased their impressive projects on topics such as holograms, thermal imaging, quantum erasers, and He Ne lasers. We were amazed by the students' detailed understanding and creativity, demonstrated in just one short week. Thinking about the future with such brilliant young minds emerging is exciting. Photon Camp starts this week at The Institute Of Optics! We are thrilled to welcome high school students from various districts around Rochester. Over the course of this week, these young enthusiasts will dive into the world of optics, exploring its fundamentals, engaging in hands-on activities, and learning about practical optical systems. Yesterday morning, under Professor Julie Bentley's expert guidance, students gained in-depth knowledge of foundational optical concepts and explored the intricacies of common optical systems. In the afternoon, a tour of the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) provided a comprehensive look at the sophisticated machinery and underlying principles that drive cutting-edge optical research.
