EPA Announces Chemical Candidates for Prioritization Under TSCA On September 30 and October 1, EPA hosted webinars announcing their candidate list of 27 chemicals under TSCA, from which five will be prioritized. Twenty-four of the 27 chemicals were included in the 2014 TSCA Work Plan, including multiple chemicals used in the petroleum industry and in plastics. Of note, the candidate chemicals also include Bisphenol S, 6PPD, and hydrogen fluoride, which were not included in the 2014 TSCA Work Plan, but have faced increased scrutiny in recent years. The full list of candidate chemicals is as follows: 1. 1-hexadecanol 2. 2-ethylhexyl 2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (TBB) 3. 4-tert-octylphenol [also known as (4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)-phenol)] 4. Benzene 5. Bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4,5,6-Tetrabromophthalate (TBPH) 6. Bisphenol-A (BPA) 7. Creosote 8. di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) 9. Ethylbenzene 10. Naphthalene 11. n-nitroso-diphenylamine 12. p,p’-oxybis (benzenesulfonyl hydrazide) 13. Styrene 14. Tribromomethane 15. Triglycidyl isocyanurate 19. Antimony and antimony compounds 20. Arsenic and arsenic compounds 21. Cobalt and cobalt compounds 22. Lead and lead compounds 23. Long-chain chlorinated paraffins (C18-C20) 24. Medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (C14-C17) 25. Bisphenol-S (BPS) 26. Hydrogen fluoride (HF) 27. N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) Industries that manufacture or sell any of the candidate chemicals should stay apprised of further prioritization activities under TSCA. Integral Consulting Inc. is at the forefront of regulatory changes under TSCA. Questions? Reach out to our regulatory toxicologists Claire Hamaji, MPH, and Heather Lynch, MPH, DABT for help navigating these rapidly evolving regulations. #TSCA #regulatoryupdate

Publishing unvetted science risks undermining public understanding as well as scientific credibility. As #PeerReviewWeek2024 concludes, we're reminded of how vital peer review is in ensuring research quality and supporting exemplary scholarly communication. This reflection hits home as we consider an emerging, troubling trend: sensational headlines taking precedence over thoroughly vetted science, especially in areas of emerging contaminants such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and microplastics.
