🌔 Fifty-five years ago today, a giant leap for mankind was made when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took humanity's first steps on the Moon. An estimated 650 million people watched live on television thanks to the Intelsat Early Bird satellite. 🛰️ Speaking of "early birds," the astronauts had originally planned to rest before walking on the Moon, but they were excited to make history and took their first steps five hours ahead of schedule.

🚀 Intelsat’s Tysons interns had an out-of-this-world experience during a private tour of the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum! Hosted by the amazing curator and historian Teasel Muir-Harmony, the interns explored the new “One World Connected” exhibit that is home to Intelsat II, as well as the “Destination Moon” exhibit, just in time for the 55th anniversary of our Moon landing broadcast in 1969. 🛰️ Huge thanks to Intelsat rock stars and unofficial historians Jean-Luc Froeliger, SVP of satellite operations, and Steve Lott, director of global communications, for their support of the intern program and for organizing the tour. #Intelsat60 #OTD

On this day in 1985, Intelsat transmitted the Live Aid benefit concert to 150 nations around the globe. Held simultaneously in London and Philadelphia, the event featured iconic performances by more than 75 acts including Queen, David Bowie and Elton John. An entire field of satellite antennas was required to transmit a whopping 16 hours of footage that was viewed by nearly 40% of the world’s population. Five Intelsat satellites, among the 13 total, were used to beam the broadcast live around the world. The concert was projected to raise $1 million for famine relief and raised $140 million by the time the charity dissolved in 1992.
