About us
A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, the International Republican Institute (IRI) advances freedom and democracy worldwide by developing political parties, civic institutions, open elections, good governance and the rule of law. President Ronald Reagan’s call to “begin a major effort to secure the best - a crusade for freedom that will engage the faith and fortitude of the next generation” started a new chapter in the advancement of democracy and freedom around the world. Since 1983 IRI, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, has worked to advance freedom and democracy worldwide by providing assistance to nations at various stages of political development: from those struggling to free themselves, to those in transition and to established democracies. Throughout the world, IRI has worked to promote democracy by supporting open and transparent elections, strengthening electoral processes and political parties, increasing government transparency and accountability, and ensuring the right of all people to be represented fairly and justly by their governments.

I’m honored to join the International Republican Institute's International Election Observation Mission in Mozambique as we prepare to observe the October 9th election. Our team will be deployed across the country to monitor key aspects of the election, including administration, citizen participation, inclusivity, security, legal frameworks, and campaign conduct. On Election Day, we’ll observe polling operations from station openings to the tabulation and transmission of results. Following the election, we’ll issue a preliminary statement with initial observations on the transparency and conduct of the process, and a comprehensive report with in-depth analysis and recommendations will follow. A new nationwide public opinion poll from #Nepal conducted by IRI's Center for Insights in Survey Research (CISR) shows high levels of confidence in democracy, but persistent concerns about unemployment and a desire to see new political parties. “These findings are a welcome sign of Nepal’s progress in building up its democratic institutions,” said Steve Cima, IRI’s regional director for South Asia. “The people of Nepal clearly want a government that reflects their priorities, and their desire for new political parties indicates that more work needs to be done in this area.” Read the full poll here: https://lnkd.in/eYkaRr2H

The event featured an in-depth presentation of our new white paper, which provides critical insights into both the risks and opportunities that generative AI presents, and recommendations for action, particularly for stakeholders in the Global South. Special thanks to our speakers, Nicklas Bang Bådum, Rebecca T, and Lavina Rao (Ramkissoon), for their valuable contributions. If you were unable to attend, we invite you to watch the full session at the link below. From August 20th to the 22nd, the IRI Kazakhstan Team conducted an intensive Public Opinion Research Training in Almaty, Kazakhstan, led by Sonja Gloeckle, Senior Director at IRI's Center for Insights in Survey Research. The program brought together 26 civil society leaders from across Kazakhstan. The three-day training offered comprehensive guidance on public opinion research methods, questionnaire design, data analysis, and strategies for integrating research findings into their advocacy efforts and campaigns. Participants shared their own perspectives on how to understand, interpret, and respond to the views of Kazakhstani citizens. The training concluded with hands-on exercises to empower participants to apply their new skills to civic activism in their home communities. This training was a continuation of IRI’s ongoing efforts to promote broad civic engagement to reach Kazakhstani citizens in all regions and communities.
