(CBS12) — As children across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast spend increasing amounts of time online, CBS12 News is looking at the risks of online predators. CBS12’s Amber Raub sat down with the director of a special task force dedicated to taking down online predators and safeguarding our children from these dangers before it’s too late. The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) works to tackle this issue daily. The force is part of a national network with 61 teams across the country,with one location in South Florida. The force’s mission is to investigate, prosecute, and respond effectively to these heinous crimes. “All our kids are online these days, and these predators know where to find them. Back in the day, used to be the scary guy at the park or the van, we say no to strangers. But now the playground is online, so they know where to go to find these children, and they start enticing them there,” said Sgt. 🚀Sex offender linked to multiple states, crimes arrested in Sacramento County with teenage girl, sheriff’s say🚀 ✨An observant Sacramento County jewelry store clerk helped deputies arrest a sex offender linked to multiple states and crimes, the sheriff’s office said. In February, officials said 44-year-old Scott Bartholomew Prange was shopping for a “promise ring” with a 15-year-old girl in Rancho Cordova. The clerk felt Prange’s behavior was suspicious and contacted the dispatch center. Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Amar Gandhi said deputies found Prange was a tier-3 sex offender, the highest risk category for the most serious sex crimes. He had multiple prior arrests for absconding from parole, including fleeing the state and multiple arrests for being in possession of child pornography. “Since then they’ve just uncovered so many other potential victims,” Gandhi said. Officials said Prange was found to have thousands of videos depicting child pornography. After further investigation, detectives uncovered videos Prange produced himself showing sexual abuse of children, officials said. Untold numbers of the children — who were released into the US to “qualified sponsors” — are now at risk of sex trafficking, forced labor, and other forms of exploitation, a Homeland Security Inspector General’s report released Monday said. As of May 2024, there are 291,000 migrant children who arrived in the US as unaccompanied minors who were set free and never given a date to appear in immigration court — meaning there is no way to track their whereabouts. Most children are being harmed by online content and almost one in five has been approached by a stranger over the internet, new research shows. The study also shows the true scale of online risk to youngsters is greater than most adults realize because only one in ten children tell parents or carers if they have come across illegal, explicit, or harmful content.
