International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 (IYRP2026) is a global initiative to provide the impetus and momentum necessary for a worldwide understanding of the importance of rangelands and pastoralism to healthy ecosystems, global food security, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and rural economies.

Pastoralism is a livelihood strategy premised on livestock mobility in marginal environments around the world, but is now facing many challenges. Climate change has resulted in more erratic and unpredictable rainfall patterns with increased frequency and duration of drought events. Compounding this, widespread socio-political change has involved loss of traditional grazing lands or conflict in accessing them, resulting in diminished livestock mobility. The year 2026 has been designated as an International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists IYRP2026. It is imperative and critical to join hands with pastoralist communities including other indigenous communities and rangeland users during this time of 2026. The International Year will be celebrated in Mongolia and also individual countries can celebrate IYRP 2026.

The International Year of the Rangelands and Pastoralism IYRP Working Group on Pastoralist Youth and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) are offering a free online learning adventure about Pastoralism in Development. Online context - short articles, videos, animations, quizzes and interactive discussion fora - will be supplemented with once-a-week Zoom calls for 5 weeks.
