Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh and Fred Guttenberg have strongly opposing political views. With school shootings becoming more prevalent, researchers and advocates are continuing to reevaluate where we are as far as who we hold accountable. A new study in the Journal of the AAPL - American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law estimated that one life was saved for every 17 extreme risk protection orders issued, further highlighting how ERPOs can be used to prevent suicide.    “Extreme risk protection orders (ERPOs) can help ensure safety for individuals who pose a risk of intentional self-injury with a firearm, for whatever reason or motivation, these legal tools offer a versatile and promising intervention to prevent suicides.”    Read the full study:  https://lnkd.in/ePvkVQgP

It was an honor to host researchers and policy experts from the National Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) Resource Center [ERC] at Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions last week in Lake County to discuss the lifesaving Firearm Restraining Order (FRO) tool. When someone is in crisis, they need time to seek help and support. The FRO is a tool that allows Illinois residents to do just that—hit “pause” on a situation to provide an individual in crisis time to heal by removing firearms from a potentially volatile situation. Our team organized numerous trainings and a round table for physicians, social workers, family law attorneys, public health experts, law enforcement officers, and students to discuss how to promote FRO education and awareness, overcome challenges in implementation, and receive feedback from practitioners. A huge thank you to the Johns Hopkins team—Shannon Frattaroli, Spencer Cantrell, and Lisa Geller—for sharing their time and expertise with us in Lake County. I am especially grateful to the residents and practitioners who offered unique insights as well as the GVPI team who made this visit possible. NEW Resource: ERPO Model Policy Guide  Our team compiled leading research, analysis, and expert guidance into a new roadmap to inform the development of evidence-based Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws. These policies are a tool shown to prevent firearm suicides, interpersonal violence and mass shootings.  Our Model Policy Guide equips advocates and lawmakers with evidence and provides promising practices for ERPO policies that should be incorporated into the law.
