〰 The JLK Architects + Holabird & Root Women Build Team Fundraiser Trivia Night was a huge success! 〰 Sloan generously donated their stunning showroom in Fulton Market to host the event. Last night, attendees enjoyed snacks, beverages, trivia, and a raffle with ALL donations collected during the event supporting Habitat for Humanity Chicago's Women Build. The Women Build event helps build Habitat Chicago homes that will be purchased by women with affordable mortgages. While the team will continue fundraising through the end of October, they'll be heading to the construction site soon to help build these homes! 〰 You can support our JLK-ers' team at the link below, and stay tuned for photos of their Build Day coming up on October 3! https://lnkd.in/gxcjvkVs #fundraiser #givingback #volunteer #preservation #homeownership #womenindesign #womeninarchitecture #womeninpreservation

✨ Bienvenidos a Little Village ✨ and Happy Mexican Independence Day! Preservation takes a village, and we're proud to have been part of the team to restore the Landmark Little Village Arch for the Chicago Department of Transportation! The structure serves as a significant gateway to the Mexican and Mexican-American community of Little Village. Last week, JLK Architects President Meg Kindelin joined Mayor Brandon Johnson, Alds. Michael Rodriguez and Byron Sigcho-Lopez, veterans and original contractors and builders of the arch, as well as many other members of the project team and community to celebrate the unveiling of the restored Little Village Arch. Today, the arch stands restored just in time for Mexican Independence Day festivities. Originally built in 1991, the arch was designed by Mexican-American Architect Adrian Lozano and features a bronze clock that was gifted to the community by former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari. It was listed as a City of Chicago Landmark in 2022. JLK Historic Preservation Studio Director Timothy Scovic, AIA and Project Preservation Architect Ashley Boduch, Assoc. AIA guided the restoration project from the initial conditions assessment through full-service historic preservation architecture and construction administration services. To restore the clock, JLK coordinated with the original manufacturer and oldest clockmaker in Mexico, Relojes Centenario. JLK also conducted in-depth materials research and studies to restore the stucco and ceramic tile cladding, granite base, clay tile roof, and decorative iron banner. The entire project was coordinated with the Commission on Chicago Landmarks and the Chicago Department of Planning and Development Historic Preservation Division. #preservationforthepeople #thisplacematters #peoplesavingplaces #savingplaces #preservation #historicpreservation #preservationarchitecture #mexicanamerican #landmark #littlevillage

Another step forward for these historic skyscrapers! We're so proud to have played a part in the monumental and collaborative effort to make sure these 100-year-old buildings continue to stand for at least another 100 years! #adaptivereuse #preservationforthepeople #peoplesavingplaces #historicdowntown #historicpreservation #historicarchitecture #architecture
The ACHP and Illinois SHPO this week signed a programmatic agreement with the GSA that will save two historic Chicago downtown Loop skyscrapers from demolition and set them up for leasing to put them back into productive use. The buildings dating to the mid-1910s have been vacant for years and fallen into disrepair. The agreement stipulates that the lessee will restore the buildings, including many of the historic features. ACHP Chair Sara C. Bronin’s latest Preservation Shorts video focuses on preservation of the Century and Consumers Buildings. https://lnkd.in/ekNhDH9B Read more about the agreement and history of the buildings here: https://lnkd.in/eEQjG2hs #achp #historicpreservation Landmarks Illinois National Trust for Historic Preservation Preservation Chicago

✨ Project Spotlight! ✨ Earlier this year the Rockford Gas, Light, & Coke Company Fitting and Meter Shops Building at 915 Cedar Street in Rockford, IL was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places! JLK Architects Architectural Historian Kelsey Kuehn and Preservation Architect Kara Johnston prepared the nomination form and presented to the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council. The building is a historically significant building type (purpose-built Fitting and Meter Shop) associated with the distribution side of the local gas industry. The earliest portion of the building was built in 1915 by the Rockford Gas, Light & Coke Company. Later additions built 1925 through 1948 reflect the growth of the city and its gas distribution system. Shop workers inside the building stripped, cleaned, repaired, and tested meters while the pipe fitting and distribution fleet installed and serviced the hundreds of miles of main lines extending through the city and surrounding communities. The historic photos below show views of the gas plant in 1926 (the fitting and meter shops buildings can be seen center-right!), the distribution department employees seated in front of the building with Distribution Foreman Frank Shugart and Meter Foreman Charles Monks (pictured front left and right, respectively), a meter tester inside the building, and a 1955 aerial of the building also shows the railroad tracks and gas holder formerly at the gas plant site. JLK Architects is excited to continue working with Place Foundry out of Rockford, IL on the adaptive reuse of this significant industrial building. With the building listed on the National Register, it's now a certified historic structure and eligible for Historic Tax Credits. We're excited to move ahead and continue providing Historic Preservation Architectural Design and Historic Tax Credit Consultation services to a wonderful team! #industrialhistory #nationalregister #historicplaces #historicresearch #adaptivereuse #historicpreservation #peoplesavingplaces #historic #taxcredits #preservation #rockford

➕ The positive impacts of state and federal Historic Tax Credits can be seen state-wide, where 58% of Illinoisans live within 5 miles of a historic tax credit project! These important incentives encourage investment and preserve our state's significant structures. ➕ The great news broke last month that the Century and Consumers buildings at 202-220 State Street will be preserved and reused. As JLK Architects staff including Meg Kindelin Timothy Scovic, AIA Harshitha B. and Juliana Cardona Narvaez volunteered their time and expertise to the advocacy team (it takes a village!), we couldn't be more excited! ➕ Because the buildings are already listed on the National Register of Historic places, they are eligible for state and federal historic tax credit programs as certified historic structures. Adaptive reuse of these historic buildings, like the Chicago Collaborative Archive Center (CCAC), could qualify for state (up to 25% of qualified reimbursable expenses) and federal (up to 20% qualified reimbursable expenses) historic tax credits. ➕ From the nationally recognized and award-winning rehabilitation of the OSF HealthCare Ministries Headquarters building in downtown Peoria to the adaptive reuse of the Art Moderne Times Theater in downtown Rockford, JLK Architects is proud to provide historic tax credit and preservation architectural design services to wonderful projects across the state utilizing historic tax credits that preserve and revitalize our historic places and spaces. #thisplacematters #peoplesavingplaces #historicpreservation #adaptivereuse #downtownpreservation #historicskyscrapers #nationalregister #chicagopreservation #chicagohistory #archives

✨ Empowering others and giving back! JLK Architects designers Juliana Cardona Narvaez and Tatiana Guletsky volunteered at the Chicago Architecture Center Girls Build! Day event over the weekend. On Saturday August 24, professionals in architecture, construction, engineering, and design-related fields met with female-identifying youth (middle school through high school) in the CAC's Skyscraper Gallery to engage in a variety of hands-on activities. The event promotes inclusivity and empowers female-identifying youth to learn more about design-related career paths. As a woman-owned (Meg Kindelin) architecture firm with a team that is over 75% female-identifying, JLK Architects is dedicated to increasing equity and diversity in the field by supporting staff as they volunteer their time to events and organizations that empower and uplift. Please also consider supporting the JLK staff that are volunteering in the Habitat for Humanity Women Build by purchasing a ticket for their fundraising trivia event held at the Sloan Showroom on September 19. 📣 GREAT preservation news delivered over the weekend - the Century and Consumers buildings will be PRESERVED‼️ JLK Architects team Meg Kindelin, Timothy Scovic, AIA, Harshitha B., and Juliana Cardona Narvaez volunteered countless hours over the last few years working with Preservation Chicago Landmarks Illinois Chicago Architecture Center and many others to develop several adaptive reuse schemes for the historic Century and Consumers buildings. The Chicago Collaborative Archive Center (CCAC), publicly presented earlier this year and conceptually rendered below, emerged as the preferred scheme. The CCAC would house the archives of nearly a dozen religious orders, museums, and non-religious entities under one roof. It would also include exhibition space, art storage, a conservation laboratory, a digital media center, a lecture hall, and classrooms. The adaptive reuse of these historic buildings as a collaborative archive center addresses security needs, sustainably reuses the existing structures, and retains the historic urban fabric along State Street. JLK looks forward to the next century for these century-old skyscrapers!
