Solving Preventable Turnover for Home Care Agencies

Had so much fun with providers in Seattle at Home Care Association of America this week! What I love the most about these events is hearing owners’ stories for why they started their business. It fundamentally shapes how they run their organization and the partners they choose to shape their culture. One owner told us his reason for starting was specifically for uplifting caregivers. “Caregiving is the gateway role for American healthcare. You start as an HHA and one day you’re running a company serving thousands of patients.” Ava - Solve Preventable Turnover exists to scale these “starter stories” into the visions they dreamed from day 1.

Home Care Leader & Advocate | Founder, Reel Home Care Consulting Transforming home care agencies by helping build compassionate care with purpose and passion while maintaining balance.

I genuinely love the home care industry—it’s not just about the incredible people we get to help, though that’s a HUGE part of it. What truly fulfills me is seeing how we can empower caregivers to grow in ways that have a ripple effect far beyond their roles. David Knack from Ava - Solve Preventable Turnover and I hit it off immediately—whether it’s our shared quirky sense of humor or our passion for transparency and helping others. Plus, we have a mutual love for Taylor Swift and soon, he'll be following Barry Manilow. But I have to be honest—this podcast was challenging for me. I made a mistake that cost me a lot—time, money, and even trust within my office and clients. I ignored all the red flags and kept making excuses. It wasn’t easy, but I learned so much along the way. Recording this episode of #HomecareHindsight was both a blast and a deep dive into valuable lessons I hope others can learn from too. I hope you enjoy it as much as enjoyed being on it! #HomeCareHindsight #fanilow #homecareconsultant #ava #homecarecoach #homecareagency

Asking Home Care Leaders about their Big Mistake

"I lost my caregiver of the year and to this day I don't know why" I've heard this kind of thing from home care owners a whole lot over the past year, and it came up again in my conversation with Becky Reel. Becky talks about how important checking in on your people (your office staff, your caregivers) is to improve retention. She also said (I didn't pay her to say this) that she wishes she had Ava - Solve Preventable Turnover back when she ran her agency. The surveys and other engagement automates a ton of the manual processes that are good in theory, but often don't make their way to execution. Asking Home Care Leaders about their Big Mistake

Looking to avoid a bad hire? Sure you could ask ChatGPT to put together a job description and a hiring process. But why do that when you can take Sarah Barker's checklist for what to look for in a marketer. I see this in sales all the time. People promise a network that is going to refer them business. "They bought from me before, they'll do it again" and then it fails to materialize. So what should you look for instead? Work Ethic. Curiosity. Communication Competency. These three things will get you a long way down the road to hiring a great marketer! And while you're at it, check out #HomeCareHindsight on Apple or Spotify!

Home care owners, are you overlooking a goldmine of talent within your own ranks? In her recent chat with David Knack on Home Care Hindsight, Emily revealed how promoting from within transformed her business and, as a former caregiver herself, her life. By the time the business she operated hit $500,000 in monthly revenue, 13 out of 14 key team members were former caregivers she had personally hired and promoted. But here's the catch: it's not just about promotion. It's about mentoring, training, and creating a culture of growth. Want to learn how to implement this strategy in your home care business? Tune in to the full episode, presented by Ava, for step-by-step insights. #HomeCareHindsight #CareerDevelopment #HomeCareSuccess #EmployeeRetention

Asking Home Care Leaders about their Big Mistake

♟️ Chess not Checkers 🔴 Look, it's really hard to get proactive in home care. There's so much that comes up that is unexpected like call outs, no call no shows that demands our immediate attention. It can feel like putting out fires all day, every day. But some home care owners have built systems and processes that prevent them from having to scramble at the last minute (okay not all the time, but it helps). These systems help them "work on their business not in their business" Matt Ericksen of Griswold is helping home care owners build a proactive mindset and the operational rigor required to spend less time looking at the move right in front of you and spend more time thinking 3 moves ahead. • "Data over Dopamine" When you get that rush of dopamine, how do you respond? It’s easy to drop everything and chase more of what makes us feel good. When things are tough and there’s a lot of (boring, frustrating, draining) work to do, then what? Emily I. shares how tracking and measuring the real impact of activity can keep home care owners from the trap of chasing dopamine and instead help them commit to real strategy that produces measurable results.
