Hard to believe it, but 5 years ago today, Immediate won a $100k pitch competition, Alabama Launchpad. This was truly a “we are onto something” moment that pushed us to go all-in. Looking back over a half-decade of learnings from building a business, I want to offer a few words of encouragement: 1. Work is a lot more fun when you really believe in what you’re doing. Find a company with a mission & product/service that solves problems you care deeply about, and let the adventure unfold. 2. Do right by people and they’ll do right by you. Obviously, everyone doesn’t adhere to this and there are plenty of people always looking for self-centered angles, but my experience has been that operating with integrity will always win in the long run. 3. Surround yourself with smart people. It forces you to think on a different level. Even better: surround yourself with smart people who also work hard and push you to be a better version of yourself. 4. Being all-in on work and nothing else is a perfect recipe for burnout. Set boundaries for yourself and adhere to them… and make sure to regularly reflect honestly with yourself on this. It’s an easy one to slip up on and the ramifications can be detrimental. 5. Build a support system. Careers are hard; but there are loads of people who have already experienced what you’re going through. Seek out people whose career you admire and learn from them.
