America's Black think tank.
About us
The Joint Center was founded in 1970 as the Black think tank. Today, the Joint Center remains anchored in the Black community and collaborates closely with organizations from other communities, like the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. We focus on the impact of automation, artificial intelligence, and other innovations on the future of work, economic development, and quality of life in communities of color. We also work to increase diversity among staff in Congress.

The lack of top staff diversity on Capitol Hill is scary. 😨👻 In 2022, we found that while POC made up 40% of the U.S. pop, they were only 18.3% of top staff. After #ElectionDay, we’ll share data on who hired diverse top staff in Congress. See the 2022 data: https://lnkd.in/eBV3RN5b

We’re less than a week away from #ElectionDay. After the votes are tallied, the Joint Center will track which member of Congress hires top staff who are reflective of their constituents. See our work after the 2022 election here: https://lnkd.in/eBV3RN5b

We were thrilled to honor former Joint Center President Spencer Overton with our Louis E. Martin Great American Award tonight. This award, which serves as the Joint Center's highest honor, recognizes individuals who have made transformational contributions that furthered the promise of America as a land of hope and opportunity for all. We thank Spencer for playing an integral role in the Joint Center’s 54-year-long history as a leader of the organization for ten years and his continued work as the Patricia Roberts Harris Research Professor of Law at The George Washington University, where he leads the Multiracial Democracy Project. This year’s celebration of Spencer Overton also marks the 20th anniversary of the Louis E. Martin Great American Award, which has previously been given to Stacey Abrams, Congressman John Lewis, President Jimmy Carter, and more. See all our recipients here: https://bit.ly/3Yhx0a3
