We are pleased to share that Julie Morita MD has been appointed the Joyce Foundation's new President & CEO. She was selected following an extensive national search to replace longtime President and CEO Ellen Alberding, who is stepping down after 22 years in the role. Julie will join the Foundation on October 1. Julie was most recently executive vice president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), overseeing all programming, policy, research and communications activities. She also previously helped lead the Chicago Department of Public Health for nearly two decades, first as a medical director, then as chief medical officer before being appointed commissioner in 2015. “I am thrilled and deeply honored to step into the role of President at the Joyce Foundation. It is a tremendous privilege to lead an organization with such a remarkable legacy of positive impact,” she said. “I take seriously the responsibility of upholding the Foundation's values and am committed to working closely with the Foundation’s staff, partners, and Board to further its mission and vision.” Welcome, Julie! More than 200 of you joined us last week for "Optimizing Crime Gun Intelligence," the latest installment of our #LunchAndLearn webinar series. With Understory Consulting researchers and Milwaukee Police Department Captain Phil Simmert, we learned more from the findings of our recent report about how ATF crime gun tracking tools like eTrace and NIBIN can disrupt the supply of crime guns, identify and apprehend offenders, and prevent future acts of gun violence. Also, how law enforcement can expand and strengthen using these tools nationwide. Click the link below to watch and share the webinar--it's a tremendous resource for jurisdictions nationwide in the effort to reduce gun crimes and increase public safety. We've also linked the report in the comments. #GunViolencePrevention #PublicSafety https://lnkd.in/g7cSnQDb

Spotlight on #2024JoyceAwardees Edra Soto and The Sculpture Center.✨ ”La Distancia” is an outdoor sculptural installation and immersive gallery exhibition addressing themes of displacement, diasporic identity, and cultural memory that integrates the vernacular architecture of Soto’s native Puerto Rico and personal ephemera contributed by community members into Cleveland’s urban landscape. “In the last 25 years, Cleveland’s Latinx community has nearly doubled; ‘La Distancia,’ through its many phases and its ultimate creation of a project archive, will allow this community to see themselves—and be seen—in a meaningful and intentional way.” — #EdraSoto “La Distancia” will engage local artists and community members and their contributions in both an outdoor installation and TSC’s indoor gallery space, juxtaposing and finding common threads between seemingly disparate lives. Spotlight on #2024JoyceAwardees Katie Ka Vang and Theater Mu. ✨“Hmong Futures” is a new theater project illuminating the diverse stories of the Hmong diaspora in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, reflecting on the 50th anniversary of Hmong and Southeast Asian resettlement in the United States. “As a first-generation Hmong American, my worldview was largely shaped by my refugee parents' lived experiences related to trauma, political persecution, displacement, and poverty, and I hope my work is a vessel for myself and my community to co-create ideas that point toward liberation and transformation.” — #KatieKaVang The Twin Cities are home to the largest Hmong American population in the United States in a major metropolitan area, and the project will provide a forum for people to imagine a collective future of well-being and abundance, beyond survival. Data centers that power artificial intelligence (AI) use much more energy than other computer applications; for example, an AI query uses 10x the electricity of a traditional Google search. The rapid growth in data centers creates challenges for the electricity grid and sustaining water resources. Joyce recently commissioned an analysis of existing groundwater policies to help inform decisions about sustaining plentiful water resources in the Great Lakes region. 40-75% of residents in the Great Lakes states get their drinking water from groundwater. Our region's prosperity is tied to our shared water stewardship, and it is crucial to recognize that every land use decision is a water management decision.
