The Kavli Prize is a partnership between The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, The Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, and The Kavli Foundation. The Kavli Prizes recognize scientists for pioneering advances in our understanding of existence at its big, small, and complex scales. Presented every two years in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience, each of three international prizes consists of $1 million USD. Laureates are chosen by committees whose members are recommended by six of the world’s most renowned science societies and academies: the Chinese Academy of Science, the French Academy of Sciences, the Max Planck Society, the National Academy of Sciences, the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and the Royal Society. Winners receive gold medals in Oslo, Norway, in a ceremony presided over by His Majesty King Harald.

An everyday task of proofreading a paper in college sparked the pivotal idea for Kavli Prize Laureate Doris Tsao’s Kavli Prize-winning research. But the paper didn’t belong to her or a fellow student; it was her father’s. Doris grew up as the daughter of two academics who encouraged Doris to love learning. Reading her father’s paper in college that discussed how to compute a 3D model with only 2D pictures was a lightbulb moment for Doris: How do our brains process visual information from our eyes in a three-dimensional way?

Welcome to #KavliPrizeWeek in Norway! We kicked off the week with a boat tour of the Oslo Archipelago with the 2024 laureates and their guests. Then we convened for the Kavli Prize Reception at Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi.
Just because the path is full of twists and turns doesn’t mean the destination isn’t worth the journey. Over the course of her academic and professional life, Kavli Prize Laureate Nancy Kanwisher dropped out of graduate school three times and pursued both journalism and nuclear strategy. It wasn’t until a decade later that she ran her first brain imaging experiment. That experiment set her on a path to many more, and her identification of the area of the brain that perceives faces earned her The Kavli Prize. Keep returning to the path that intrigues you, no matter the detours along the way.
For Kavli Prize Laureate Paul Alivisatos, a single experiment stands out in his memory as the moment that inspired him to become a nanoscientist. As an undergraduate student, Paul took a physical chemistry class where he experimented with a metal whisker-shaped wire that transformed inside a vacuum chamber. As the metal atoms condensed and took shape under the influence of an electric field, they would light up. Paul was fascinated to see the very concepts he studied in the Harper Library at the University of Chicago take place in front of his eyes, and “worked as a nanoscientist ever since.” Can you trace your interest in your work back to a single moment?
Who are the people who have made the biggest impact on your professional life? For Kavli Prize Laureate Chad Mirkin, it was two professors who taught him foundational skills he used in the rest of his career. Chad credits Professor Greg Geoffroy and Professor Mark Wrighton with teaching him the “intricacies of scientific inquiry” and the “art of communicating science well.” Chad used those skills to ask the right questions in the right way, such as this one about the capillary effect: “What if the water droplet could be leveraged as a tiny reactor?” That question led to the invention of dip-pen nanolithography (DPN) which is used in investigating molecular electronics.
