In May, a two-alarm fire broke out at a senior housing facility in San Francisco’s Japantown district, displacing over fifty seniors, many of whom are low-income monolingual Korean and Chinese elders. They have been temporarily relocated to the city of Alameda while they await repairs. KCCEB and the American Red Cross have led the response and recovery efforts including temporary shelter, meal distribution, transportation, assistance in grocery shopping, making medical appointments and buying basic essentials. KCCEB has also provided Korean and Mandarin language wellness checks with individual seniors. We are grateful for small businesses that have stepped in to support these residents, including EM Deli & Catering, BB Bowl (a local Alameda favorite), good light, and KP Asian Market. You can make a direct impact on the recovery effort by donating to KCCEB (indicate “Alameda” in the note/comment field for fund allocation) at givebutter.com/KCCEB. #ThrivingCommunities #BayAreaNonProfit #MealsforSeniors #RapidResponse #KCCEBCommunity

About us
Since 1977, Korean Community Center of the East Bay has been uniquely positioned to serve the Asian community in the Bay Area. KCCEB has evolved into a unique entry point for Korean and other immigrants who have nowhere else to turn to for their essential support. KCCEB is comprised of three divisions: The Immigration Integration Program supports immigrants to become engaged members of society. We offer no-to-low cost immigration services for immigrants seeking to become naturalized citizens. The Community Health Access Program creates access to affordable health care and social services including healthcare enrollment, social service support, case management and a Korean language information and referral service. The Asian Community Wellness Program promotes mental health and community wellness with a focus on low-income East Asian communities. We offer counseling, health promotion classes, wellness workshops and leadership classes.

Yesterday, we packed the court once again to advocate for continued funding for life-saving Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) services that API youth, elders, and limited-English proficient individuals depend on. Many members of the KCCEB community as well as our partner organizations made moving public statements rooted in their lived experiences to shed light on why #PEI #mentalhealth programs are a lifeline for the community. #Advocacy #MentalHealthMatters #HealthEquity #AANHPI #PreventionMatters Pysay Phinith Yeri Shon, MPH, MSW Amy G Lam PhD

Thank you Asian Pacific Fund for uplifting #community driven solutions for #mentalhealth that aims to move people on a continuum of care towards stabilization and #empowerment. Korean Community Center of the East Bay (KCCEB)'s Asian Community Wellness program addresses cultural, structural, and societal barriers that keep people from seeking support. #PreventionMatters #AAPIMentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters Amy G Lam PhD June Lee Pysay Phinith Christina Yu, LCSW
Mental health is often framed as an individual issue. We seek to redefine mental health by shifting the focus to institutions, highlighting how longstanding and systemic inequities contribute to unwellness. During our 2024 AANHPI Summit on Reclaiming and Redefining Mental Health, we hosted an outstanding panel on "Unpacking the Drivers of Mental Health & (Un)Wellness," moderated by Tavae Samuelu, APF Director of Community Initiatives & Grantmaking. Our fantastic group of panelists—Amy G Lam PhD from the Korean Community Center of the East Bay (KCCEB), Kevin Niuatoa from RAMS, Inc. (Pacific Islander Wellness Initiative), and Connie Wun, Ph.D. from AAPI Women Lead—explored various factors influencing AANHPI mental health, including cultural stigma, generational differences, and access to culturally competent healthcare. The panel also discussed strategies for improving mental wellness and support systems in these communities. This engaging discussion helped to raise awareness and propose actionable solutions to address these mental health challenges. A special thank you to our panelists and their respective organizations for participating in the Summit and sharing their dedication to our community, their voices and passion, and their commitment to addressing AANHPI mental health. If you missed the panel, you can watch it on our 2024 AANHPI Summit playlist at https://lnkd.in/gqnXCS4r. #AANHPISummit2024 #MentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #AANHPI #AAPI

We had so much fun at our book talk last week with author Margaret Juhae Lee and artist Dave Young Kim! It was heartwarming to reconnect with our long-time supporters and to meet new community members over a lively discussion about the strength we can find in sharing our stories. Here’s Margaret’s advice on opening dialogue with family members: “Start with questions around rituals that people feel comfortable speaking about- a zone where you both feel comfortable. Once people start talking, oftentimes they will go places they didn’t know they were going.” #Storytelling #BookTalk #KoreanAmericanArtists #ReclaimingOurNarrative #LostHistory #BayAreaBookEvents #KoreanHistory #AAPI #Memoir #bookstagram #2024books
