Well done Mercedes-Benz AG!
This is so cool! 💚 Mercedes-Benz AG has become the first car manufacturer in the world to open its own dedicated facility for recycling electric vehicle batteries. Located in Kuppenheim in southern Germany, it is the first in Europe to combine mechanical and hydrometallurgical recycling. This process can recover up to 96 percent of the raw materials from the batteries. Copper, plastic, and iron are separated through a multi-step process, and from the so-called “black mass” in the battery electrodes, cobalt, nickel, and lithium are extracted using hydrometallurgy in various stages. The factory aims to recycle enough material to supply over 50,000 battery modules (2,500 tons) per year. It will be powered by fossil-free electricity, and its roof features solar panels capable of generating 350 kW of energy.
