🩺 Radiation therapy is a common and effective treatment option for breast cancer. It’s a process that uses high-energy X-rays to target and destroy cancer cells. A radiation oncologist may or may not recommend radiation depending on factors such as the stage of breast cancer and the type of surgery a patient received.   “While radiation therapy can be lifesaving, every person reacts differently to treatment, and there may be side effects,” says Scott Barton, MD, chief radiation oncologist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “Some side effects are mild and short-term, resolving within months after treatment ends, whereas others may take longer to appear and heal. With our continuous adoption of new techniques for the delivery of radiation at Kelsey-Seybold, side effects are becoming less likely and less bothersome. It’s essential to communicate with your care team about any changes you experience.”   Side effects of radiation therapy may include:  ◻️ Fatigue  ◻️ Low blood counts   ◻️ Skin irritation, dryness, and color changes   ◻️ Breast soreness  ◻️ Breast swelling from fluid build-up  ◻️ Heart complications  ◻️ Rib fractures   ◻️ Lung damage  ◻️ Nerve damage in the shoulder and arm    At about one year post radiation treatment, you shouldn’t notice any new side effects. If you do see changes in breast size, shape, appearance, or texture, it’s important to speak with a doctor right away.   Radiation therapy can sometimes be a difficult and grueling process, but you are not alone, and there are management strategies that can help! Remember to rest, hydrate, moisturize, and lean on your care team, family, and friends for support.  #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #RadiationRecovery #StayStrong #SideEffects

🩺 Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration commemorating the history and culture of U.S. Latino and Hispanic communities and how they have influenced and contributed to American society. It also provides an opportunity to shine a light on the health disparities challenging the Hispanic and Latino communities and unite us all in the fight for health equity.  “Compared with other racial and ethnic groups in the U.S., Hispanic or Latino people are the least likely to seek medical care for an injury or illness due to language barriers, lack of paid sick leave and health insurance, and underrepresentation among health care professionals,” says Angela Guerra, MD, a Family Medicine and Occupational Medicine physician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.  The Hispanic community faces disproportionately higher rates of:   ◻️ High blood pressure   ◻️ High cholesterol    ◻️ Diabetes   ◻️ Hypertension    ◻️ Cardiovascular disease    ◻️ Workplace/unintentional injuries   ◻️ Cervical cancer   ◻️ Liver cancer   ◻️ Stomach cancer  “It’s important to recognize these disparities and have more inclusive and preventive care that is tailored to the needs of the Hispanic community,” says Dr. Guerra. 🩺 Did you know that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? In 2024, an estimated 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer death in women. However, a breast cancer diagnosis is not a death sentence – there is hope. When detected in its earliest, most localized stages, the five-year survival rate is 99%, which is why early detection and routine check-ups are crucial. “The key to overcoming breast cancer is early detection,” says Tamer Khashab, MD, a hematologist and oncologist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “Knowing the signs and symptoms, scheduling regular mammograms, and performing regular self-exams are valuable tools for catching it before it spreads.”  Some common symptoms of breast cancer may include:  ◻️ Nipple tenderness  ◻️ A lump or thickening in or near the breast/underarm area  ◻️ Scaly, red, or swollen skin of the breast, areola, or nipple   ◻️ Change in shape or size of the breast (especially if on one side only)  ◻️ Nipple turned slightly inward or inverted  ◻️ Nipple discharge     Don’t wait. Think Pink and speak with a primary care provider or schedule a screening with your OB/GYN today at https://lnkd.in/gy2F8hY  #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #ThinkPink #mammogram #early detection
