Updates

  • Save the Date -- Give for Good Louisville is coming up on September 12th! For nearly 50 years, Kentucky Youth Advocates (KYA) has dedicated itself to improving child well-being, public policies, and the systems that impact children, families, and communities. As Kentucky's only multi-issue, nonpartisan statewide child advocacy organization, KYA operates throughout the Commonwealth, from urban centers to mid-size and rural communities. As we look ahead to Election Day and the 2025 state legislative session, it's as important as ever for child advocates to stay "in the know" and be equipped to speak up for Kentucky kids. Will you join us on September 12th as a kid advocate mobilizer? Learn more: https://bit.ly/3z6F9Wi

  • In July, REFORM Louisville members Lee and Dequantay spoke at the National Conference of State Legislatures with state Senator Westerfield about how they were able to shape legislation on House Bill 3. The conversation highlighted how Senator Westerfield took the time to listen to their experiences and how they wished more legislators did the same. Senator Westerfield shared the importance of engaging young people in the decision making process. Quantay and Lee also shared their experiences with mental health, the importance of being empathetic towards kids, and how much that can mean to them when they're going through things, as well as the impact of therapy. • 📣 Youth Advocacy In Action 🗣 Introducing our 2024-2025 Health Youth Ambassadors! These high school students from around the Commonwealth are eager to make positive changes in their communities and throughout the state. “Working with the other advocates to learn what problems we had in our different communities and what we could do about them helped me to understand that even as teens we can always have an impact on our communities. This retreat has made me excited for what HYA will work together to make possible this year!!” – Lydia Check out our recent blog highlighting our newest youth ambassadors, their Onboarding Retreat in Bowling Green, and learn what awesome things this group has in store for this year: https://bit.ly/4dHLGWf

  • Everyone needs a safe, stable place to call home. However, a short supply of housing has made this increasingly difficult for Kentucky’s young people. The 'Fostering Connections: The Housing Landscape for Foster Care Alumni and Recommendations' report, released by Kentucky Youth Advocates, sheds light on the critical housing needs of young adults ages 18-28 in Louisville, particularly young adults who have spent time in foster care as children. It also offers recommendations to create a more accessible, efficient, and supportive housing system that meets the unique needs of foster alumni. “As a parent, the significance of a home is what helps me sleep at night. Knowing my child has a safe place to rest her head means that I can seize the day and be confident in our future,” said Tatum Heath, Peer Coach with True Up at Kentucky Youth Advocates. • As a donor of 35 years and board member, Bill shares: "I have literally seen the impact that KYA has made for children, legislatively and systemically. I attended the first Children's Advocacy Day at the Capitol back in 2004 when there were only a handful of attendees and have seen it grow to a full week with a rotunda overflowing with advocates. KYA's consistent track record of wins and positive approach to tackling hard challenges emboldened me to make the decision to support KYA even after I'm gone. It brings me peace to know that, with my support, KYA will continue to make a difference for my grandson's generation and beyond."
