Kevin Daly Architects is an architectural practice with a focus on craft, construction systems, and material research. Our work interweaves innovation in technology and fabrication, sustainability and urbanism, livability and economy. Buttressed by project-directed research, the work of Kevin Daly Architects pursues design excellence in the public realm. The firm’s award-winning portfolio includes environmentally and socially responsive educational, residential, and institutional projects ranging in scale from single-room artist workspaces to campus master planning. KDA is recognized for reclaiming and transforming sites characteristic of the urban fabric, turning generic background buildings into models of community identity. The practice has been recognized with over thirty AIA awards, the Rudy Bruner Foundation’s Gold Medal for Urban Excellence, and the AIA/ LA’s Firm of the Year Award. University of California, Berkeley celebrated the opening of the xučyun ruwway graduate student apartments in University Village on Wednesday with local Ohlone leaders. The name translates to "our homeland house" in the Chochenyo language, recognizing the land of the indigenous Ohlone people. This innovative student housing project maximizes sunlight and sustainability to create an inspiring home for graduate students. The building's four housing wings are angled for optimal solar orientation, with open stairways, balcony landings, and small study rooms offering spectacular views of the bay, bridges, and downtown skyline. Metal screens wrap open stairs and elevator lobbies becoming shade canopies, gates, and fencing while metal window surrounds on the south elevation provide shade throughout the day, reducing heat gain and creating visual interest. The Houston Endowment project features louvers with a semicylindrical shape that bends at the edges to connect with the next panel, with the largest panel measuring 4.40m. These louvers also utilized an internal rib cage system to ensure structural stability for the large-scale panels. This rib cage design was not only crucial for maintaining rigidity but also played a key role in the installation process.
