Tommy Hartrick was a bear of a man. We met when I was a 1st Lieutenant fresh out of the Basic Reconnaissance Course. All Reconnaissance Marines seemed larger than life to me at that point in my career, but Sgt Hartrick was literally one of the largest men I ever met in my life. He towered over most Marines and his muscular frame was equally suited for the NFL as it was for combat. Some real life perspective may be useful here. Joining the Reconnaissance Community is a humbling experience. There were no rookies at the 1st Force Reconnaissance Company. Every Marine who served there was a top performer with multiple valor awards on their chests and numerous combat deployments under their belts. Professional excellence was everyone’s minimum expectation, and it was hard to stand out in such elite company. Well, it was hard for everyone who wasn’t Tommy. Hartrick had an impressive resume, even as a young Reconnaissance Marine. He made a name for himself as a machine gunner in Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines in both the invasion of Iraq and the battle of Fallujah. He snuck out of the battalion aid station after he was shot and finished Operation Al-Fajr with a bullet in his leg. Tommy was a Staff Sergeant, and a team leader, by the time we served together at 2nd Platoon, 1st Force. He was a force of nature. Tommy had an unnatural knack for perceiving the battlefield that I still cannot fully explain. It would be easy to chalk this up to experience but it went beyond this. We got in a wicked fire fight during a mission to destroy a Taliban IED cell in the town of Bar Nowzad in 2008. It was a bad situation. We were surrounded on three sides and the Taliban were moving to completely envelop us. We were laughably outnumbered. Hartrick didn’t say a word. He shifted his team to the west and uncovered a large group of Taliban moving on our flank. They didn’t survive long enough to gain any tactical advantage against us. I could give you another dozen examples of his gift for combat. He always put himself at the point of friction, a lynchpin in our repeated attempts to emerge victorious against impossible odds. There was no stopping Tommy in battle. He performed the impossible so often that I started to believe he was un-killable. Unfortunately, it turns out I was wrong. Master Sergeant Thomas Hartrick (retired) died last night due to complications stemming from an overseas assignment. His death comes as a shock to everyone who knew him. He was one of the bravest, and toughest Reconnaissance Marines I ever met. Fair winds and following seas Marine, you are missed.

Honoring the Legacy of LTC Jaimie Elizabeth Leonard On June 8, 2013, the world lost a dedicated and selfless servant leader when Lieutenant Colonel Jaimie Elizabeth Leonard made the ultimate sacrifice in Sharana, Afghanistan, at the age of 39, succumbing to injuries sustained from small arms fire. LTC Leonard was an esteemed intelligence officer with the 10th Mountain Division, and her life was defined by an unwavering commitment to our nation and a profound sense of duty. Throughout her distinguished 16-year military career, Jaimie Leonard displayed exemplary service, with assignments taking her to South Korea, Germany, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the Pentagon, Fort Drum, New York, and multiple deployments, including three combat tours—two in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. Her selfless devotion to her country earned her numerous accolades and decorations, including two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. Lieutenant Colonel Jaimie E. Leonard's legacy will continue to inspire us, reminding us of the remarkable dedication and valor displayed by those who choose to serve their nation. Today, we honor the memory of 1st Lieutenant Roslyn "Roz" Schulte, a true American hero. Her unwavering commitment to service, exceptional leadership, and selflessness continue to inspire us all. Lt Schulte was assigned to the Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan (CSTC-A) at Camp Eggers in Kabul in 2009 and served as the command's foreign disclosure officer. Her mission was to facilitate information sharing between coalition forces and Afghan military partners, a task of utmost importance. On May 20, 2009, Roz’s life was cut short when an improvised explosive device struck her vehicle First Lieutenant Roslyn Schulte was the first female Air Force Academy graduate to die in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2010, the Air Force Academy established the prestigious Lt. Roslyn Schulte Cadet Award, a tribute designed to honor a cadet who exemplifies the same unwavering commitment to impeccable character, steadfast leadership, and an unyielding spirit of service that characterized Lieutenant Schulte throughout her remarkable life and career. This enduring legacy serves as a testament to her enduring influence and the indelible mark she left on the hearts and minds of those she touched. Today, we honor a true American hero, Captain Brent Morel, whose courage and leadership in the face of adversity serve as an inspiration to us all. Brent epitomized the virtues of valor, dedication, and self-sacrifice. He deployed to Iraq in late 2003 as a platoon commander with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion. Iraqi insurgents ambushed his platoon on April 7th, 2004, and destroyed the lead vehicle in his convoy. Brent led his Marines through heavy fire to collapse the ambush in a vicious counterattack. His selfless assault helped defeat the numerically superior enemy, but he was mortally wounded in the process. Captain Morel was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his extraordinary heroism. As we reflect on Captain Brent Morel's story, let us carry forward his spirit of service, courage, and leadership. A native of Old Town, Maine, Sergeant Nicholas A. Robertson dedicated his life to serving his country as a devoted son, scholar, musician, and soldier. He displayed exceptional bravery and skill in combat while serving with the Military Intelligence Detachment, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group. Nick was an accomplished soldier who used his advanced linguistic and cryptologic talents to intercept enemy communications and warn his fellow soldiers of impending attacks. Tragically, he sustained fatal wounds during dismounted combat operations in the Zahn Khan District, Afghanistan, on April 2, 2008. Sergeant Nicholas A. Robertson will be remembered for his unwavering courage, his boundless kindness, and his dedication to making the world a better place. Today we pay tribute a true American hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country. I'm deeply honored to share the inspiring story of Cryptologic Technician Technical Chief Christian M. Pike, a true American hero whose life was defined by duty, honor, and unwavering dedication to our country and fellow service members. Chief Pike possessed a rare combination of traits that made him ideally suited for tactical SIGINT operations. He was an expert in his field, physically fit, and thrived in expeditionary combat environments. He deployed to the Maiwand district of Afghanistan with SEAL Team FIVE in 2012, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Chief Pike played a pivotal role in the SEAL platoon, intercepting Taliban communications to alert his teammates of impending attacks. On March 10th, 2013, Christian's SEAL platoon patrolled the Maiwand district when he detected indications of a large Taliban ambush. Despite being outnumbered and facing the Taliban in their familiar terrain, Chief Pike fought fiercely to defend his brothers-in-arms. He provided critical intelligence on real-time enemy movements and actions, and his commitment to his mission and comrades never wavered. Tragically, Christian was seriously wounded in the ensuing battle and passed away days later. His sacrifice and unwavering dedication to his duty serve as a testament to his character and exemplify the best of our nation's military tradition. Christian Pike embodied honor, compassion, and unwavering patriotism. His posthumous awards, including the Bronze Star with Valor, recognize his bravery and dedication. As we remember him, let his life inspire us all to live with the same sense of duty, honor, and joy that he exemplified. Rest in peace, Chief Pike.
