🏕 Time for Making Memories KIDZ hematology/oncology physician Dr. Athena Pefkarou — or "Dr. P" as the kids call her — cancer care team members from KIDZ and the Helen & Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, will be kicking off Camp U.O.T.S. this weekend. The camp is a special place for kids with cancer, counselors who are survivors themselves, and clinicians who want to continue providing hope. 💛 Dr. Pefkarou not only lends the camp her medical expertise, she's also involved in the logistical planning and coordination. 👶 Helping Babies Thrive Today, critically ill babies have a higher chance of survival and long-term success than ever before, thanks to the advanced care provided at neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across the nation. Our co-founder and leading neonatologist, Jorge E. Perez, MD, recently joined the CEO of West Boca Medical Center, Jerad Hanlon, to speak at the Boca Raton Chamber membership breakfast. They discussed the benefits of having a Level-3 NICU close to home — and with an expert team from KIDZ to ensure that babies get their best chance to thrive. 🗝 Some key highlights from Dr. Perez’ presentation: ✅ Neonatal intensive care units provide highly specialized care for pre-term babies, but also for full-term newborns who present with unanticipated complications. ✅ Advanced treatments include whole body cooling therapy, nitric oxide therapy, Golden Hour protocol, and access to a complete range of pediatric specialties. ✅ Use of NicView 2 live video streaming camera system to allow parents and family to view their infant in real-time through a secure online portal. ✅ Active participation in the Florida Perinatal Quality Collaborative (FPQC), a consortium established to improve Florida’s maternal and infant health outcomes.
