We're thrilled to share Architectural Record's June 2024 cover story featuring the newly renovated Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. Reopening to the public on June 21, the Folger houses the world's largest collection of Shakespeare's printed works. Over the past ten years, KieranTimberlake has partnered with Folger to provide strategic planning services, culminating in an expanded site and reimagined visitor experience. To complement the 1932 landmarked building by Paul Cret, KieranTimberlake went below, literally digging beneath the structure to create a more equitable and welcoming experience for all. “This is a building of great rooms,” said Partner Stephen Kieran. “We modernized the three historic rooms, but in a silent way. And we created the gardens as outdoor rooms.” The 6,000 square foot addition includes a lobby, exhibition halls, learning lab, gift shop, and offices, while vastly improving accessibility and circulation. “This project offers an alternative—without any changes to Cret's original elevations—and a way forward for institutions seeking to grow but contending with limitations,” they write. Next week, Partner Jason E. Smith and Principal Marilia Rodrigues will lead a panel at the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) national conference in Philadelphia. Focusing on the recently completed Eric J. Barron Innovation Hub at Penn State University, “The Power of Partnership: Planning for Innovation” will address how colleges and universities can engage in equitable planning and design processes that uphold institutional values and reflect the needs of broad, diverse audiences to create spaces that inspire innovation. Joined by Lee Erickson, Chief Amplifier for the Office of Entrepreneurship and Commercialization, and Greg Kufner, AIA, AUA, NCARB, University Architect, both from Penn State, the session will shed light on how institutions and designers can create interdisciplinary spaces that foster collaboration, innovation, and access for the benefit of students, faculty, and the community. Completed in 2021, the Innovation Hub is a thriving nexus for student and community entrepreneurship and home to Invent Penn State, a Commonwealth-wide initiative to spur economic development, job creation, and student career success. The makerspace and technology labs provide access to cutting-edge machinery and rapid prototyping for all students, faculty, and community entrepreneurs. These free services also include equipment training, skill-building workshops, and one-on-one consultations. “The Power of Partnership” will be presented on Tuesday, July 23, during the 9:50am session block. 📷 Halkin Mason Photography

🏆 Our design for the Penn's Landing Pavilion has won a #WAFX Award in the Carbon and Climate category! It is projected to be Philadelphia's first mass timber and zero carbon structure for public use. The WAFX Awards are for future projects that address major architectural issues facing society and the planet. The overall winner of WAFX will be announced during the live festival in November. The Penn's Landing Pavilion has also been shortlisted in the World Architecture Festival's Civic Future Project category. The new Park at Penn's Landing was developed in collaboration with Hargreaves Jones Landscape Architecture, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The park broke ground in September 2023 and will reconnect Philadelphia to its river's edge by constructing a transformational civic space at the heart of the city's waterfront. The I-95 Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) project will guide pedestrians from city sidewalks to an 11.5-acre park with a series of public amenities and attractions. In our final video on The American Institute of Architects (AIA)’s 2030 Commitment, Associate Kit Elsworth shares how a current KieranTimberlake project utilizes strategies we previously explored in this series: 🌿 focusing on carbon intensity over energy use 🌿 overcoming the energy efficiency plateau 🌿 opportunities and limitations of renewables Targeting LEED Platinum, the central pavilion at the new Penn's Landing Park is projected to be Philadelphia’s first mass timber and zero carbon structure for public use. Designed in collaboration with Hargreaves Jones Landscape Architecture, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the new Penn’s Landing Park broke ground in September 2023. As 2030 approaches, let’s continue to support each other, work together, and share lessons learned.
