  • One year ago today, Captain Dan Krehbiel and Deckhands Nick Williams and Cory Bantam were making their last run of the day when they noticed something strange. A loose barge was heading right toward the downtown Seattle waterfront! The Doc Maynard crew sprung into action when they realized the quickly moving barge was moving solo with no tugboat steering the vessel. As Capt. Krehbiel told the Seattle Times that he warned the 14 passengers on the water taxi that “our trip is going to be delayed a little bit.” The tiny water taxi was able to divert the mammoth barge just enough to push it away from the heart of the waterfront. The actions of Capt. Krehbiel, with the assistance of Williams and Bantam, prevented a potentially catastrophic situation along the waterfront, with minimal damage to the barge and the water taxi. And the Doc Maynard was only 15 minutes late from its scheduled arrival at Pier 50! Video credit: Kara Johnson @ TrueNWGirl29 on X

  • Each October, King County joins the nation in celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This year’s theme, “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation,” reminds us of the crucial role people with disabilities play in creating a truly inclusive and thriving workforce. On Oct. 8, King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci honored these contributions by officially proclaiming October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. At Metro, Transit Disability Services (TDS) is dedicated to assisting employees with disabilities throughout the employment process, including: -Providing reasonable accommodations -Identifying resources to help employees stay at work or return after an illness or injury -Supporting employees’ success, engagement, and productivity to help them reach their life and career goals While we've made progress, October is an important reminder of the work to be done. Nationally, only 37% of people with disabilities are employed, compared to 75% of those without disabilities. In King County, the employment rate is 46% higher than the national average but still not where it needs to be. Note: This message is paraphrased from a letter to employees with internal resources written by Metro Interim Human Resources Manager Ariana Basilias.

  • Join us in celebrating 15 years on the Puget Sound (aka the Salish Sea)! This month marks the 15th anniversary of King County operating the Vashon Water Taxi! Since 2009, Metro has transformed this unique transportation option from a commuter-only service into a bustling lifeline, now boasting 10 roundtrip sailings every weekday, all year round. And at the heart of this journey is the beloved Sally Fox, named in honor of the dedicated Sally Willinger Fox, a true champion of passenger-only ferry service connecting rural Vashon Island to the busy streets of downtown Seattle. Celebrate by hopping on board for a fresh 22-minute ride from Pier 50 to the Vashon Ferry Terminal! Experience the stunning views and charm that Vashon has to offer. Let's set sail and celebrate this incredible journey together. https://bit.ly/3XTFyVY #VashonIsland #WaterTaxi #KingCountyWaterTaxi #SallyFox

  • Have you noticed a “clear” change in many of Metro’s shelters? That's probably the polycarbonate! In more than 1,100 shelters (about 60%), we’ve introduced polycarbonate instead of glass. Polycarbonate is the best choice for many reasons, including appearance, safety, and the environment! In addition to the new look, we have also introduced cleaning around the clock with three 8-hour shift crews per day. And an innovative sidewalk and surface cleaner that looks like a home robot vacuum—but with handles. Learn more about these changes at: https://bit.ly/4dT2oBC As always, reports from riders help Metro ensure we’re always providing high-quality transit service. Visit https://lnkd.in/gwQdbEV2 or call 206-553-3000. Our goal is to respond to concerns within 24 hours.
