Welcome to Kipster. The Farm That Gives A Cluck
About us
Revolutionizing Farming For a Healthier Planet and Better Animal Welfare We redefine the role of livestock in the food ecosystem. Our chickens contribute to a better environment and prevent food waste by turning surpluses of agriculture and food processing into nutritious eggs and meat, as well as valuable fertilizers. The carefully controlled upcycled feed contains, for example, leftovers from sources such as large bakeries, and pasta factories. In close collaboration with scientists and animal welfare organizations, the Kipster Farm was designed for the chicken's needs. Chickens are forest birds, and the farm is set up for them to carry out our natural behaviors as much as possible. Outdoor gardens and indoor gardens with perches, haybales, peck stones, daylight and dustbathing spaces allow for the hens to express their natural behavior.

Winner winner, good egg award for dinner. There’s some extra happy clucking at Kipster today. We have been recognized for our animal welfare commitment. According to Julia Johnson, MDiv, MS, head of food business, Compassion in World Farming (USA): “Kipster’s entry into the U.S. egg industry has been nothing short of groundbreaking!” We would like to thank everyone who has been a part of this journey. Together with consumers, NGO's like Compassion in World Farming, MPS Egg Farms and companies like Kroger, we really can change the food system and do better for people, environment and the animal. CEO and Founder Ruud Zanders received CIWF's Good Egg Award for Kipster's next level animal welfare practices at the award ceremony in Paris earlier today. #goodeggaward2024 #eggs #animalwelfare

Here’s an update about our efforts to use in-ovo sexing technology for hatching eggs in the United States. We have tried hard to use the technology for yesterday’s hatch, but we were unable to achieve this. After initially aiming for this, in-ovo technology providers and hatcheries have not yet installed machines that can identify the gender of the chick in white hatching eggs in the U.S. at this moment. We explored other options, including bringing in-ovo sexed chicks in from Europe in consultation with NGOs, government, and others. Chicks flown in from Europe need to go through a 30-day quarantine process. It was not possible to find an egg layer pullet raising farm that is equipped and approved by USDA to do this in the short term. As a result, the male chicks from our current flock—approximately 24,000—were euthanized. While this is an industry norm, it is a particularly painful reality for us at Kipster, as one of our founding principles is to avoid the unnecessary culling of male chicks. In Europe, our male chicks are raised for meat, and we made every effort to do the same in the U.S. Unfortunately, we have not found a viable path to bring this meat to the market, yet. Therefore, we donated the meat from previous rooster flocks to local food banks. In-ovo sexing is our plan B. We are fully aware that implementing our full Kipster vision in the U.S. will take time and persistence. Nevertheless, we remain steadfast in our commitment to creating a future where the brothers of laying hens are treated with the same care as their sisters. We will not accept the status quo. Though in-ovo sexing technology will be installed in the U.S. by the end of the year, the machines being installed are limited in that they only work with brown hens, and not the white hens that Kipster raises. We will keep working towards solutions for the next Kipster flocks in close consultation with stakeholders, including hatcheries, technology providers, and NGOs. Keep any eye on our social media posts or newsletter to follow our progress. Or reach out if you’d like to collaborate with us to find ways to bring the meat to market or to implement in-ovo technology for white eggs. #in-ovo #inovotechnology #roosters #animalwelfare #eggs

"We have to make an agricultural food system that is within the planetary boundaries" - Ruud Zanders, founder of sustainable poultry farm, Kipster who has contributed a chapter to our new book 'Regenerative Farming and Sustainable Diets'. In his chapter, he highlights the painful consequences of industrial agriculture in the Netherlands. He proposes a new Food Agreement between government, society and farmers which would lead to a radical transition of the food system towards the provision of healthy and sustainable diets, leaving no one behind. During summer, between spring and autumn wild bird migrations, cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza tend to drop. With the risk of avian influenza being lower in the farm’s area, the Kipster farm visitor’s center has reopened, and the hens are back outside. But the fall migration is upon us and risks are expected to increase. During these high-risk periods, the hens are kept inside. Each Kipster house has a large daylight-filled indoor garden where the chickens can still express their natural behavior while in lockdown. Here are some additional key measures taken to ensure the wellbeing of the chickens: - Plenty of natural daylight in the hen houses to maintain chicken well-being and natural rhythms. - Fresh air: Robust ventilation for air quality and health. - Enrichments include hay bales, perches, climbing structures and peck stones. Peck stones allow chickens to condition their untrimmed beaks and hay bales provide a distraction as well as fiber to prevent pecking. - Litter on the floor for dust bathing. - Feed spread across the floor to keep them foraging. People can still see the hens via live-streaming cameras (see YouTube @kipster.farm), even when the visitor center is closed.
