Knights of Columbus members from the Luzon South State in the Philippines traveled to the island of Mindoro to charter 31 new members from the Hanunoo Mangyan tribe, the largest of the eight indigenous Mangyan tribes on the island. The newly formed council, named Risen Christ Church Council 18514, is the first in the Philippines composed entirely of indigenous people. The Knights emphasized the importance of diversity, supporting indigenous communities and remembering the original people of the land.

During their tour of facilities and programs operated by the Tulay Ng Kabataan (“A bridge for children”) Foundation in Manila, Philippines, on Aug. 21, Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly and the Knights of Columbus delegation visited a shanty town called Barangay Aroma. Foundation director Father Matthieu Dauchez led them through the town, named ironically for the pervasive smell, and they were graciously welcomed by everyone they met. The centers there operated by the TNK Foundation — including a child daycare facility named for Mother Teresa — are like oases within a desert of extreme poverty. (Photos by Tamino Petelinšek)
