About us

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work. Lambda Legal has been making the case for equality on behalf of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV throughout the United States for more than 35 years. Our strategy combines groundbreaking work in the courts with innovative education and public policy work to change the hearts and minds of the public — and to teach people how to make sure that LGBT civil rights are respected. Through our offices in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles, we average over 60 cases at any given time, tackling a range of issues including marriage, relationships and parenting; employment discrimination; HIV; health care; transgender rights; youth issues; and the battle for fair courts. Lambda Legal’s mission is to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work. We see our efforts as an integral part of the continuing struggle for civil rights in America.

  • At this very moment, the federal government is attempting to undermine access to passports for transgender, gender-nonconforming, nonbinary, and intersex (TGNCNBI) people by introducing new passport policies that force people to out themselves any time they must show their ID. But you can help make a difference RIGHT NOW. Through Advocates for Trans Equality’s Freedom to Fly campaign, we can push for federal documents that match our lived gender—ensuring that TGNCNBI people can move through the world safely and with dignity. The State Department is accepting public comments until 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday, March 17 for people to submit their concerns about these anti-trans policies. Use Advocates for Trans Equality’s simple, three-step portal to help you submit your comment. The more voices we raise, the harder it becomes for the government to deny our fundamental right to freedom of movement. Submit your comment now: https://lnkd.in/eMUhEwM6

  • Meet Kayla Gore, an unapologetic Black trans woman based in Memphis, Tennessee. Through her activist work and Lambda Legal case, she is making history in the here and now as she advocates for secure housing and accurate identity documents for the trans community. 🌟 “I think for me and for a lot of trans people, we want to be seen as human beings. We want to be seen as equal individuals and receive equal protections under the law.” Kayla is one of the founders of My Sistah’s House, a grassroots organization in Memphis that builds tiny houses for trans people of color. She’s also a plaintiff in our case against Tennessee’s discriminatory policy seeking to prohibit trans people from correcting gender markers on birth certificates. “Being trans to me means living authentically true to yourself, regardless of what society thinks of us, especially the Tennessee legislature.” Thank you, Kayla, for all the incredible work you do to #SpeakOUT for trans visibility, safety, and justice! 🏳️⚧️👏 #WomensHistoryMonth

  • In this edition of “Meet Our Lawyers,” we’re highlighting Ali Curd. Since joining Lambda Legal, Ali has fought hard against the onslaught of attacks against the LGBTQ+ community in general, and the trans and gender-nonconforming community in particular, at the federal level. “I am driven to work with and for the communities that shaped me and poured into me. As a proud Black, bisexual femme, I felt especially drawn to the movement right now because I think our voices are needed now more than ever.” Learn more about Ali: https://lnkd.in/egY3zGNp #WomensHistoryMonth

“They still have my passport, but even if I were to get it back, I’m not sure I could travel with it,” said Westley Ebling, who works for Lambda Legal. “It’s basically like transgender folks have been put on an informal travel ban, unable to leave the country that so despises us.” via #WashingtonPost Read the full article now: https://lnkd.in/g44tiUwi Photo by Marvin Joseph/The Washington Post

  • NEWS: Today, alongside our partners at the ACLU, we filed a motion in federal court asking the court to enforce its nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration from restricting funding for providers of gender-affirming medical care to people under 19. Despite the granting of the injunction on March 4, some federal agencies have issued notices that “are a transparent attempt to coerce medical providers to ignore their best medical judgment and instead follow politically charged edicts from the President.” We’re asking the court to enforce the preliminary injunction and make it clear that the Trump administration cannot threaten medical providers or hospitals’ federal funding for providing necessary gender-affirming medical care while the injunction is in place. • Tonight, President Trump will deliver an address to a joint session of Congress. We anticipate that much of what he will say will outline the numerous heinous executive orders his administration has put forward, as well as his plans for future orders that will continue intentional chaos and harm to our communities. Lambda Legal’s responses to President Trump’s blatant discrimination have never minced words, and our actions to fight back have been swift. We won’t stop now. Our team of legal and policy experts will watch this address closely and listen carefully. Follow along with us on Bluesky at lambdalegal.bsky.social at 9 p.m. ET. #FearlessAndFightingBack #LambdaLegal #LGBTQ #Equality
