Call for submissions- tinyurl.com/BlackAugust24 ÀṢẸ AMEN AYIBOBO is an invitation to recenter ourselves in the Black spiritualities of our ancestors. This is a spiritual stance against the social, political, and economic volatility experienced by Black folks under the conviction that prayer, petition, and providence have carried us through similar moments in the past and can get us through today. Spiritualists, artists, and culture workers are invited to submit creative offerings of prayer, petition, or/and providence for the 4th annual ÀṢẸ AMEN AYIBOBO project. Submissions will be shared on a rolling basis as individual posts throughout the month of August via Lanbi ak Manchét's Instagram page. Additionally, these posts will be compiled into one longer video to highlight all of the artists/creatives' work. This compilation will be posted on Lanbi ak Manchét's Vimeo/Youtube page.

Ayibobo Alyn Bernard Défay, Nick-Edward Wolley, Alina Allen Youseline Vital This groundbreaking exhibition features two collections: 41 works from the Jacques Bartoli Collection of contemporary Haitian art (30 paintings and 11 beaded flags), previously presented at UNESCO in Paris and making its debut in Louisiana, and 36 original paintings and photographs by eight Haitian and Louisianan artists commissioned for the occasion by Haitian-born curator Max Jean-Louis. This exhibition aims to commemorate Haiti’s 220th anniversary of independence and celebrate the deep-rooted connection between Haiti and Louisiana.

Since the past weekend Haitians in Haiti have been dealing with an exacerbated level of violence of unimaginable proportions. The Haitian government declared a state of emergency following attacks by gang members on Haiti’s National Penitentiary and another prison in Croix des Bouquets that freed over 3000 prisoners, including some gang leaders. One of the most notorious gang leaders, former police officer Jimmy Chérizier (aka Barbecue), has overtly stated that he—along with the newly-formed gang coalition Viv Ansanm— is ready to do whatever it takes to overthrow the government. Meanwhile de facto Prime minister Ariel Henry was in Kenya to finalize the deal whereby Kenya will lead a U.N.-approved security mission to Haiti. As of Wednesday March 6th, Henry was unable to return to Haiti as gangs occupied the airports and there are rumors that the US is asking for his resignation. Panelists will also discuss possible scenarios to resolve the current crisis.

This week LaM was in DC for #internationaleducationweek Nyya Toussaint spoke on the “Raise the Bar: Advancing Careers through Multilingual Education” panel where recipients of the Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship, the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad fellowship, and the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program shared how their experiences advanced their area studies and modern foreign language knowledge and expertise.
