We are pleased to welcome Efrat Dotan, MD, MTR, to Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health as executive medical director of the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. Dr. Dotan succeeds founding medical director Randall A. Oyer, MD, who retires from the practice of medicine after more than 40 years. A renowned medical oncologist and clinical investigator who specializes in gastrointestinal cancer care and geriatric oncology, Dr. Dotan joins us from Temple Health’s Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, where she served as chief of the Division of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology and professor in the Department of Hematology/Oncology. Dr. Dotan leads national clinical trials investigating new treatment approaches for gastrointestinal malignancies and developing novel treatment approaches for the care of older adults with cancer. She serves as chair of the Older Adult Oncology Guidelines Panel for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, chairs the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Geriatric Oncology Working Group, and serves as co-chair of the National Cancer Institute Pancreatic Cancer Task Force. She has a strong commitment to teaching and education, serving as a leader of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program at Fox Chase for many years and publishing extensively in her area of expertise. In her role as Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute Executive Medical Director and professor of Clinical Medicine in the Perelman School of Medicine, Dr. Dotan will drive high-quality, personalized cancer care in Lancaster, and partner with senior leaders at Penn Medicine and the Abramson Cancer Center to advance cancer care innovation and research across the University of Pennsylvania Health System’s cancer system. http://spr.ly/6048qFLYu

Along with our presenting sponsors Benchmark Construction Company and Capital Blue Cross, we want to express our deep appreciation to everyone who supported our recent Wine Heart Gala. With your help, we netted more than $153,000 for our cardiovascular programs and services for our community. In addition, through gifts made that evening, we will be able to increase access to life-saving automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for local first responders, schools, churches, and non-profit organizations. We were honored to have one person who benefitted from the availability of AEDs, in attendance at the event, celebrating with his friends and family. In 2022, Fred Kohler (center) went into cardiac arrest at a local gym. Abbey Oatman (second from left), a Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health physician assistant, was working out close by. Along with others, she ran to Kohler's aid and began CPR. As they were doing breaths and compressions, an AED was brought to them, allowing them to shock Kohler within three minutes of his heart stopping. His pulse resumed, and he began to regain consciousness. By the time paramedics arrived on the scene, he was awake and talking before being taken to Lancaster General Hospital for bypass surgery. Learn more about the importance of AEDs, and how Kohler and Oatman, now running partners, have formed a lasting friendship: http://spr.ly/6041qAGWF
