Today, our Associate Council, Meena, brilliantly argued against a motion to dismiss Reyes v. City of New York in the Southern District of New York, advocating for the public's right to record in NYPD precinct lobbies. Representing SeanPaul Reyes, aka 'Long Island Audit', she defended our First Amendment rights with compelling clarity. Earlier this year, the court granted an injunction allowing Reyes to continue recording, affirming the public's right under the Right to Record Act. Congratulations to Meena for her steadfast dedication to justice and transparency! 🏛️

About us
LatinoJustice works to create a more just society by using and challenging the rule of law to secure transformative, equitable and accessible justice, by empowering our community and by fostering leadership through advocacy and education. We accomplish our mission by focusing our work around the following pillars: Immigrants Rights | Economic Justice | Voting Rights | Criminal Justice Reform | Leadership Development We use Impact Litigation, Pipeline Education Programs, and Community Engagement & Advocacy as strategies to execute our work: Our impact litigation cases have helped Latinos access educational, employment and housing opportunities, as well as voting rights. Our legal work has also defended Latinos against unlawful law enforcement tactics and hate crimes. Our pipeline education programs provide Latino students with access and resources to pursue a law degree and other higher education that paves the way for professional success and community leadership. Our community engagement and advocacy initiatives ensure that Latinos participate in daily civil life - such as elevating their voices on issues that matter, such as voting, workers's rights, immigrants rights and criminal justice reform. In sum, to be active members and leaders in their communities. LatinoJustice PRLDEF has served tens of thousand of US citizens, immigrants, and non-Latinos whose rights are protected by the precedents set and behaviors modified through the litigation, advocacy, and legal education outreach of our organization.

Today, we're celebrating a remarkable achievement by Karen, our Justice Catalyst fellow! When Karen passed the bar, she made a promise to Veronica, one of our dedicated legislative advocacy volunteers: she would represent Veronica's son, David, pro bono at his future parole hearing. We're happy to announce that David has been granted parole thanks to her pro bono representation! Join us in congratulating Karen for her dedication to justice and for going above and beyond in her advocacy efforts. 👏 Learn about our work to transform our current harmful criminal legal system➡️ http://bit.ly/3XHRUQw

We’re proud to highlight the contributions of our board member, Sonja, as she provides commentary on the election process. Her recent participation in NBC Los Angeles' post-debate coverage offered valuable perspectives on the dynamics of the debates and their potential impacts on diverse voter groups. Way to go, Sonja!
Thrilled to have joined NBC Los Angeles post-debate coverage last night, offering political commentary on another pivotal moment in this election cycle. I shared insights on Donald Trump's performance in his second debate, forced to maintain a semblance of composure in the face of the VP’s astute attacks on his campaign and the moderator’s clarifying questions about his record and public statements. VP Kamala Harris continued her introduction to American voters as she works to establish her presidential credentials by detailing the contours of her economic opportunity agenda. Engaging discussions like these help shape our understanding of the candidates and their paths forward. Looking forward to seeing how the debate will influence the race, especially young people and undecided voters of color! #PoliticalCommentary #Election2024 #DebateAnalysis #NBC4

🎓 Day 3 of #ASPIRA50! Today, we reflect on our spring convening where LatinoJustice PRLDEF and ASPIRA NY united to strategize on improving educational outcomes for Latino K-12 English Learners. Despite significant legal advances, the educational gap for these students remains a critical challenge. This gathering brought together a diverse mix of educators, advocates, and officials to share experiences, tackle barriers, and shape future advocacy. Did you know that LatinoJustice, A.k.a., the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, played a key role in getting bilingual education into U.S. schools? In ASPIRA v. NYC Board of Education, our very first case, we fought for the rights of 80,000 Spanish-speaking Puerto Rican students to get the school services they needed. Paving the way for expanded bilingual education throughout New York and the nation. Today, we kick off a week-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ASPIRA Consent Decree and how it revolutionized education for kids learning English! 🎉 This is a legacy we can be proud of, and which we want to extend today for a new generation. Watch the full story of the ASPIRA Consent Decree in our documentary on YouTube: https://bit.ly/4dFApWM 🎥
