The first week we got our hands on GPT-4 and started planning CoCounsel, Jake and I said: Just IMAGINE what this could mean for access to justice. Over 90% of people with civil legal needs in the US lack access to legal counsel. Meanwhile, GenAI can provide a stunning amount of capacity to lawyers who know how to use it effectively. I’m thrilled to announce the launch of AI for Justice, a program from Thomson Reuters designed to make AI more operationally and financially accessible to the legal aid community. We’re partnering with an impressive group of legal services organizations to develop best practices for using AI on dozens of common legal aid issues including immigration, housing, federal benefits, habeas petitions, and many more. The goal is to identify, develop, and share concrete use cases across the legal aid community, helping LSOs leverage this technology effectively and to serve more people in need. Are you a nonprofit that provides free or subsidized legal services to communities in need? Reach out here: https://lnkd.in/gkZSvS9h Thanks to our LSO Innovator partners, who we are thrilled to collaborate with on this important mission: Lawyers Alliance for New York, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, Lawyers Without Borders, The Innocence Center, Northwest Justice Project, Veterans Legal Institute, Michigan Indian Legal Services, Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino, Great North Innocence Project, and the other members of our incubator. Thanks also to Legal Services Corporation, National Legal Aid & Defender Association, OpenAI, Paladin and the Thomson Reuters Foundation for informing and supporting this program. #accesstojustice #generativeAI #A2J https://lnkd.in/gyQgTY2u (Thanks Ambrogi!)

Elizabeth and Bennett, we truly appreciate your representation of Lawyers Without Borders at the Trust Conference. The event consistently excels in highlighting the crucial role of technology and collaboration in addressing global challenges. Congratulations to the Thomson Reuters Foundation for another outstanding Trust Conference. #trustconference #thomsonreutersfoundation #lawyerswithoutborders
Day one of the Thomson Reuters Trust Conference has been nothing short of thought-provoking and inspiring. It has been an honour to attend this conference as a delegate and represent Lawyers Without Borders. A massive thank you to LWOB for allowing me to attend. Today’s discussion sessions and presentations tackled some of the most pressing issues at the intersection of democracy, media freedom, law, and technology. Some of the key discussions included: - The Fight to Save Democracy: Maria Ressa, Kara Swisher, Steve Hasker, and Barbara Serra explored how AI, business, and journalism are shaping the future of democracy, and how we must safeguard media freedom to preserve democratic values. - Global Democratic Decline: Staffan I. Lindberg from the V-Dem Institute delivered a sobering presentation on the rise of autocracies worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for action to protect democratic institutions. - Super Election Year: Jeff Allen, Ritu Kapur, Claire Leibowicz, and Yasir Khan delved into the critical role elections play in shaping our world and how misinformation, fueled by AI, threatens free elections. - Safeguarding Information in an AI-Driven World: Graham Brookie, Ginny Badanes, Rasmus Nielsen, and Courtney Radsch discussed the growing role of generative AI and the importance of transparency and policy frameworks to ensure AI remains ethical. - Under Siege: The Cost of Defending Press Freedom: Carolina Henriquez-Schmitz powerfully described how “lawfare” is being used to silence journalists and how legal professionals defending the free press are facing increasing persecution. - Defending the Defenders: José Zamora, Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC, Ginna Anderson, and Rebecca Vincent discussed the grave threats faced by lawyers standing up for journalists—ranging from physical harm to digital surveillance and even threats against family members. This is of course not an exhaustive list but I just wanted to highlight some of the sessions that really stood out to me today. Looking forward to continue these important conversations tomorrow as we continue discussions on future and role of law, technology, and human rights in securing and upholding global democracy. Once again thank you to Robin Taylor and Tammie Follett, Esq. for allowing me to represent Lawyers Without Borders and attend such a prestigious and important conference. #TRTrustConference #Democracy #AI #PressFreedom #HumanRights #ResponsibleBusiness

On Thursday, September 26, Lawyers Without Borders proudly launched its "Future of Africa" campaign at a breakfast event graciously hosted by Kirkland & Ellis in New York City. Guests attended from across our network of lawyers, judges, non-profits, and corporate partners, enjoying a delicious Ghanaian breakfast which facilitated meaningful networking and insightful discussions on LWOB’s human rights initiatives in Africa. We were also honored to welcome The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland KC, Commonwealth Head of Africa, Ms. Abiola Sunmonu, and Assistant Secretary-General Commonwealth, Prof. Luis Franceschi, for a dynamic and informative session. The Q&A, moderated by Hon. Ann Claire Williams (Ret.) of Jones Day, examined the current state of the rule of law in Africa, the critical role of partnerships, and the value of innovative initiatives in driving progress across the continent. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our host Kirkland & Ellis and Joseph Loy, partner; our esteemed panelists, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Commonwealth Head of Africa, Assistant Secretary-General, and Judge Ann Claire Williams; and to all who contributed to the success of the event and continue to support our Africa Campaign. #law #ruleoflaw #lawyer #justice #humanrights #innovation #africa #commonwealth #collaboration #partnership #nonprofit #corporate

On September 23, Lawyers Without Borders and Jones Day were honored to host distinguished members of the Ukrainian legal community, including judges from the Supreme Court of Ukraine and its Grand Chamber, as well as appellate and first instance judges. The event, which was led and hosted by Jones Day, also received support from the International Cultural Educational Association (ICEA) leader Elena Seitz. At the event, Jones Day introduced the results of a research project conducted collaboratively between the firm, Lawyers Without Borders, Gibson Dunn and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, which analyzed Ukraine's verdicts on war crimes under Article 438 (violation of rules of the warfare) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This research is an important part of strengthening the position of Ukrainian prosecution of war crimes. The harmonization of the application of European law and the analysis of available historical precedents, taking into account the experience of considering similar war crimes in the past, will strengthen the legal position of the considered disputes in the international arena. Lawyers Without Borders is glad that our joint efforts with partners can be useful in such difficult times for Ukraine, where justice must be restored, and the rule of law must prevail over autocracy. #law #lawfirm #lawyers #democracy #ruleoflaw #justice #war #ukraine

Lawyers Without Borders is delighted to share that our Tanzania Trafficking in Persons (T-TIP) Case Compendium project in collaboration with Linklaters was highly commended in the Financial Times' Innovative Lawyers Awards Europe last week! Linklaters supported LWOB’s work to combat anti-human trafficking in Tanzania, which is funded by the U.S. State Department. Our project incorporated artificial intelligence to improve the efficiency and output of judicial processes in Tanzania on human trafficking and related issues. We would like to thank Greg Baker (Global Head of Practice Innovation), Elsha Butler (Head of Pro Bono Practice) and Lizzie-Harker Noor (Pro Bono Associate), who are shown in the second photo, as well as the entire Linklaters Pro Bono team, for everything. We congratulate Linklaters on their outstanding achievements and commitment to pro bono advocacy, which also earned them the recognition of highest-ranked law firm for social responsibility headquartered in the United Kingdom!
