Today, Matthias asks: — "Why does my back hurt so much when I sit for long periods? And how can I improve my posture?” — Welcome to Episode 202 of AskMatty! Here’s my answer, Matthias: — Part of the answer might be in your question: → You probably sit too much Here are 5 tips I shared with almost all my clients back when I was a personal trainer. They’ll help you: → Reduce back pain → Improve your posture → Boost your confidence As we know, posture and confidence go hand in hand :) 1. First tip: → Hang from a bar for a total of 2 minutes each day. You’ll probably need 2-3 sets of 40-60 seconds to reach the full time. 2. Here’s the second tip: → Go on YouTube → Search "Band Pull-Apart" exercise → Go on Amazon → Find and buy similar bands → Do this exercise every day You can do 5 sets of 10 repetitions. And rest for 1 minute between sets. Just make sure to: → Breathe in when you pull the band → Breathe out when you release the band Each rep will take 6 seconds: → 3 seconds to pull → 3 seconds to release Total: 6 seconds So, here’s the breakdown: → 1-minute exercise (6 seconds x 10 reps) → 1-minute pause Total: 2 minutes per set For 5 sets, you’ll spend about 10 minutes in total. Now the question is: → Do we have 10 minutes a day? :) 3. If you go to the gym, make sure to train: → Your back → Your rear deltoids (posterior deltoids) Check out these exercises on YouTube: → Pull-ups → Cable rows → Barbell rows → Rear delt raises → Close-grip pulls → Dumbbell rows 4. Get up from your chair at least every 50 minutes. And move around. For example, I work in 50-minute slots. Followed by a 10-minute break. So, I sit for 50 minutes — then I stand for about 8-10 minutes. In the last few minutes of my break, I run in place for 2 minutes. If you can’t run in place, try walking or go back to the second tip. 5. Do some stretching, especially for the chest. The chest is the antagonist muscle of the back. So: → Go on YouTube → Search “Chest stretching” → Pick one exercise → Do it for 2 minutes a day Simple, right? :) — Alright! Thanks for your question, Matthias.
