  • CEO Gerald Kuhn, appointed on August 1st, of the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy, delves into the intricacies of the program's inception and the power of strategic partnerships in an in-depth interview with Michael Scott. The thought-provoking conversation sheds light on the impactful initiatives of the Learning Community.

  • The Learning Community of North Omaha and Metropolitan Community College Early Childhood Program launched a summer pilot project to enhance early childhood education in Douglas and Sarpy County. The initiative was designed to elevate teacher education standards and improve program quality. One key feature was that it offered access to the nationally recognized Child Development Associate (CDA) training program, which was highly regarded in the field. Participants could earn up to 19.5 college credits toward an AA degree in Early Childhood Education from MCC. #EarlyChildhoodEducation #Learning #CommunityofNorthOmaha #CDAPathway #MCC

  • Dina Lopez and her 5-year-old daughter, Hazel, both have benefited from the programs offered by the Learning Community Center of South Omaha. Dina discovered activities she could do at home with all of her kids and has taken parenting classes, English classes and a workforce development course. Hazel has learned about her letters and how she should raise her hand to ask questions in class. Hazel also is learning to play the violin. The Learning Community Center, at 23rd and M Streets, takes a two-generation approach to its course offerings. Parents can participate in ESL and GED classes and pursue financial and computer literacy as well as other offerings. While parents are in class, their children get ready for kindergarten as they learn such basic concepts as shapes, sizes, colors, letters and numbers. The center also helps families with food insecurity and challenges finding employment. "During our graduation ceremonies, we hear from parent participants in their own words how much this program has meant to them and how life-changing it has been for themselves and for their children," said Anne O'Hara, the center's director. An analysis of the South Omaha center's work shows that children with parents who participate in the center's programming showed improvement in their ability to plan, initiate and complete activities needed for learning. Dina said Hazel's teacher has told her that Hazel was a leader in her classroom. Hazel starts kindergarten at Chandler View Elementary in mid-August. As for Dina, the center's classes have helped her grow "as a person, as a mom and as a student," and she would recommend them to anyone.

  • This month we are featuring Miguel Mora-Becerra! Miguel is our Learning Community North Parent Time Instructor, and here is what he has to say: Q: What inspired you to work at The Learning Community and how do you continue to stay motivated and passionate in your role? A: I was inspired to work at the Learning Community Center because I wanted to help families in the community create better relationships with their children and learn new skills. Continuing my work becomes easier as I get to know each family and how I can continue supporting their goals. Q: Can you share a particularly memorable experience or success story from your time working at The Learning Community that has had a lasting impact on you? A: A memorable experience that I've had working at the Learning Community was leading parents and their children though STEM activities in our last week of summer camp. Seeing families create and launch their own catapults was both fun and exciting knowing that these are moments parents will always remember with their children.
