Life Connection of Ohio was proud to support the 11th annual Kaleb McLaughlin Ride to Remember & Organ Donation Awareness Day event in Pioneer last weekend. On June 24, 2013, 20-year-old Kaleb tragically passed away, but his spirit lives on in those he touched through tissue donation. Kaleb's family organizes this event as a way to honor and remember Kaleb while encouraging others to register as organ, eye and tissue donors. "Kaleb's event was a great day... bittersweet but good. Our first year was basically to remember Kaleb, but it has grown into so much more. This is for everyone to remember their loved ones. People love the butterfly release, the rodeo, watching all the motorcycles and the bonus fireworks," Kaleb's mother and Life Connection of Ohio volunteer, Kim Oxford, said. "It's important for us to tell people that organ donation is so much more than just the 'big stuff' and to promote living donation and blood donation too – it all can save lives!" On Saturday, Life Connection of Ohio volunteer Porothea Dennis threw the ceremonial first pitch at the Dayton Dragons Professional Baseball game! Porothea was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease in 2014. She suffered a heart attack and a stroke, and her kidney function continued to decline. After three years of enduring dialysis, Porothea's life changed forever when she received a kidney transplant! Porothea's transplant allowed her to return to full-time work and keep up with her children and grandchildren. Next month, Porothea will celebrate three years of new life thanks to her donor hero and donor family. Thank you to Porothea and her family for inspiring Dragons fans to Donate Life.
