How do you balance the 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁 with the 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 in your business (and your life)?... This was the question I posed for the panelist at the 2024 Northern Utah Manufacturing Excellence (NUME) conference yesterday. I loved the answers I received from the four experts. Here is a summary of each: Tonya Petersen: Keep the Future in mind and identify the 𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 that may not be leading to that desired future and take the next steps to eliminate those roadblocks. Also, use 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 (such as assessments) to your advantage. Ryan Harris: Figure out what 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 you should be looking at and then trust them. They will help guide you! AJ Heiner: Ask yourself, what does the business need? After that, 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 is key. Make sure you're doing what is reasonable, because you cannot do it all. Candice Draper: Once you have your end goal be sure to be 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 along the way to get there. What do you suggest? (Help me out BalanceMan, Dr. Travis G. Parry) Onward! Thanks again to Forrest N. Fackrell and everyone else who contributed to a successful NUME 2024 Conference. (I see you Jamie Andrus and Kathleen Alder) Thanks to the awesome sponsors of the event: NORTHERN UTAH MANUFACTURING, Cache Valley Chamber of Commerce, BOX ELDER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, Bridgerland Technical College, and iMpact Utah/iMpactUtah My calendar is marked for October 1st, 2025 for the next one!

Our partner company, Lifestyle MFG, is doing some amazing things right now in medical device prototyping and small batch production. Their success is directly correlated to their leadership team. Jeff, Wade, Tyson, and Buster have set a high bar and exceeded their own expectations! With their solid leadership and connections, they have built a solid team around them. I don’t think I’ve seen a manufacturing team that has more fun doing what they do! Onward!

I always get a shocked look on people's face when I mention that I work the night shift with the position I'm in.  Starting a business takes sacrifice and dedication to be successful.  I am so grateful that I am surrounded by top notch people.

🎉 What happens when you combine Olympic spirit, creativity, and wood-fired pizza? You get Lifestyle Engineering's EPIC Innovation Cup! 🍕🏆 Last Friday, we wrapped up another Luncheteers book, Never Split the Difference by Christopher Voss, and celebrated with a Paris 2024-inspired triathlon (no swimming, biking, or running required). Our Lifestyle Engineering teams competed in three fun-filled events: 🔧 Building: Teams constructed balloon towers judged on Height, Stability, and Beauty. 🧠 Solving: A heated trivia battle with Lifestyle-themed questions. 🎭 Performing: Teams created skits/songs representing "The Lifestyle Way" judged on Humor, Creativity, and Accuracy—and wow, did they deliver! Shoutout to Nathan Erickson, Michelle Lowder, Mason Ferrin, and Nick Ashby, who stole the show by building a stellar tower, nailing the trivia, and performing "The Lifestyle Bunch" to the tune of "The Brady Bunch"! Oh, and we also devoured some delicious personal pizzas from my wood-fired oven. We took the total up to 167 pizzas out of my oven! 😋🍕 Big thanks to everyone for making it such a memorable and fun event! Who Said you can't have fun at work?!?! Onward! Honorable mentions to the rest of the team: James Robbins, Joseph Foley, Lifestyle Medical (Will McQueen), Tristan Spencer, Weston B., Dayne Teigeler, Spencer Johnson, Caleb L. We missed you! F.I.R.M. G.R.I.P. on our Values F - Family I - Integrity R - Respect M - Mutual Success (Win-Win) G - Gratitude R - Responsibility I - Intelligence P - Perseverance These are the values that we hold firm to at Lifestyle Medical. I just listened to The Table Group podcast episode by Patrick Lencioni that Values are Verbs. Which means values must be acted on or they aren't really values. Lots of times, we post pretty aspirations on the walls trying to capture the values. When I started Lifestyle Medical with my trusted friends, we searched deeply for what really made us tick and then we formed our values. We didn't want just pretty aspirations. We wanted something that captured us! The crazy thing is that as we headed down the road, we actually changed two of the original values (Greatness to Gratitude and Professionalism to Perseverance). Both things just "fit" better! I think a re-evaluation is important as you go. I feel our current 8 values capture who we really are today. I'm open to changing them in the future, if required, but, for now, I'm thinking about today! Give the episode a listen and determine what your CORE VALUES really are: https://lnkd.in/gfU8TZiW Onward!

Our team at Lifestyle Medical is studying the book, Crucial Conversations, as part of our Luncheteers program. It contains so many great insights. Here is the one we explored yesterday during our weekly 30-minute discussion... Nathan Erickson James Robbins #LifestyleEngr

What's the key to Hostage Negotiation?... In the book Crucial Conversations, there is a video link to a short clip in which one of the authors, Ron McMillan, had an interesting conversation in an airport with a Hostage Negotiator he happened to sit next to. In the conversation, Ron asks lots of questions that he believes will lead to some cool insights into how the negotiation team TAKES DOWN the bad guy. Little did he know, he was actually going to get an even more impactful insight.... He found out that negotiators know that people are RESPECT RADARS (new term for me, but I like it). True dialogue cannot happen when respect is absent. The first thing, and ultimately the key, to hostage negotiation is giving respect to the perpetrator. That's right, the first thing they're looking for is respect. They want to be heard, and they want to be respected...just like everyone else. My deep learning was this: You know how they say that respect is earned? Well...maybe that's not as true as I thought it was. I actually now believe that Respect is Given, whether it is earned or not. I can choose to give it! So the next time we're faced with a tough situation/conversation, let's give a little more respect and see what happens! I think we'll like the results. Here is the link if you'd like to give it a listen and see if you get some additional insights: https://lnkd.in/eAesfy2h Crucial Learning VitalSmarts Photo Credit: Maine.gov

Here's what we, at Lifestyle Engineering, look for in a new team member...

Humble, Hungry, Humane! If any of you have ever listened to Patrick Lencioni on his The Table Group podcast or read his book The Ideal Team Player. He provides a simple almost-alliteration to remember what to look for in a good hire/team member: HUMBLE, HUNGRY, SMART. I couldn't agree more with this philosophy, but it kills me that the last word doesn't start with an "H", so I went searching for something that could still apply to the meaning Pat had for "Smart", but begin with the correct letter...hahaha! After a lengthy search, as you saw in the opening hook to this post, the word I chose was Humane. I actually think this works well because the definition of humane is having or showing compassion and benevolence. Pat's use of the word "Smart" isn't so much intellectual as it is social. Smart with people-skills (which according to Crucial Learning, are the most important skills you'll ever learn). I think that Humane works pretty well! I have more I'm planning on saying about each of these categories, so stay tuned! What do you think Patrick Lencioni? Did I do it justice? It's likely that Pat never sees this post, but I know that Mel Torrie has learned the importance of this philosophy in looking for the right team members. Let us know what you think! Onward! At Lifestyle Engineering, we work very hard on our Company Culture. What is Company Culture? See this post from one of our leaders 👇

What is Company Culture? I've heard a lot of definitions over the years, but the best one I've ever heard was this... Culture is How we think, How we act, and How we interact. Earlier this week, I listened to Maxwell Leadership Podcast episode featuring Greg Cagle, author of The 4 Dimensions of Culture, and he gave this simple and clear definition... The best I've ever heard. Let me state that one more time: Culture is How we think, How we act, and How we interact. That is so powerful and so true! Thanks Greg for sharing your insights. This is so good, I'm probably going to post about it again! If you have additional insight on defining Culture, please share in the comments. Onward!
