F.I.R.M. G.R.I.P. on our Values F - Family I - Integrity R - Respect M - Mutual Success (Win-Win) G - Gratitude R - Responsibility I - Intelligence P - Perseverance These are the values that we hold firm to at Lifestyle Medical. I just listened to The Table Group podcast episode by Patrick Lencioni that Values are Verbs. Which means values must be acted on or they aren't really values. Lots of times, we post pretty aspirations on the walls trying to capture the values. When I started Lifestyle Medical with my trusted friends, we searched deeply for what really made us tick and then we formed our values. We didn't want just pretty aspirations. We wanted something that captured us! The crazy thing is that as we headed down the road, we actually changed two of the original values (Greatness to Gratitude and Professionalism to Perseverance). Both things just "fit" better! I think a re-evaluation is important as you go. I feel our current 8 values capture who we really are today. I'm open to changing them in the future, if required, but, for now, I'm thinking about today! Give the episode a listen and determine what your CORE VALUES really are: https://lnkd.in/gfU8TZiW Onward!

Our team at Lifestyle Medical is studying the book, Crucial Conversations, as part of our Luncheteers program. It contains so many great insights. Here is the one we explored yesterday during our weekly 30-minute discussion... Nathan Erickson James Robbins #LifestyleEngr

What's the key to Hostage Negotiation?... In the book Crucial Conversations, there is a video link to a short clip in which one of the authors, Ron McMillan, had an interesting conversation in an airport with a Hostage Negotiator he happened to sit next to. In the conversation, Ron asks lots of questions that he believes will lead to some cool insights into how the negotiation team TAKES DOWN the bad guy. Little did he know, he was actually going to get an even more impactful insight.... He found out that negotiators know that people are RESPECT RADARS (new term for me, but I like it). True dialogue cannot happen when respect is absent. The first thing, and ultimately the key, to hostage negotiation is giving respect to the perpetrator. That's right, the first thing they're looking for is respect. They want to be heard, and they want to be respected...just like everyone else. My deep learning was this: You know how they say that respect is earned? Well...maybe that's not as true as I thought it was. I actually now believe that Respect is Given, whether it is earned or not. I can choose to give it! So the next time we're faced with a tough situation/conversation, let's give a little more respect and see what happens! I think we'll like the results. Here is the link if you'd like to give it a listen and see if you get some additional insights: https://lnkd.in/eAesfy2h Crucial Learning VitalSmarts Photo Credit: Maine.gov

Humble, Hungry, Humane! If any of you have ever listened to Patrick Lencioni on his The Table Group podcast or read his book The Ideal Team Player. He provides a simple almost-alliteration to remember what to look for in a good hire/team member: HUMBLE, HUNGRY, SMART. I couldn't agree more with this philosophy, but it kills me that the last word doesn't start with an "H", so I went searching for something that could still apply to the meaning Pat had for "Smart", but begin with the correct letter...hahaha! After a lengthy search, as you saw in the opening hook to this post, the word I chose was Humane. I actually think this works well because the definition of humane is having or showing compassion and benevolence. Pat's use of the word "Smart" isn't so much intellectual as it is social. Smart with people-skills (which according to Crucial Learning, are the most important skills you'll ever learn). I think that Humane works pretty well! I have more I'm planning on saying about each of these categories, so stay tuned! What do you think Patrick Lencioni? Did I do it justice? It's likely that Pat never sees this post, but I know that Mel Torrie has learned the importance of this philosophy in looking for the right team members. Let us know what you think! Onward! What is Company Culture? I've heard a lot of definitions over the years, but the best one I've ever heard was this... Culture is How we think, How we act, and How we interact. Earlier this week, I listened to Maxwell Leadership Podcast episode featuring Greg Cagle, author of The 4 Dimensions of Culture, and he gave this simple and clear definition... The best I've ever heard. Let me state that one more time: Culture is How we think, How we act, and How we interact. That is so powerful and so true! Thanks Greg for sharing your insights. This is so good, I'm probably going to post about it again! If you have additional insight on defining Culture, please share in the comments. Onward!
