When temperatures soar, many seek refuge by taking a swim in a pool, lake, river, or ocean. The cold shock caused when you jump into water can cause dramatic changes in breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure even in those who are skilled swimmers. The National Weather Service offers some advice for safely enjoying the sweet relief of cold dip, Cold Weather Facts. Savor these final weeks of summer safely. #wellbeingforall

This Black Owned Business Month, we want to highlight a few of Portland's gems. Supporting black-owned businesses in our community is a step toward healing and restoration for us all. Third Eye Books Accessories & Gifts, Thirdeyebag, is owned by Michelle Lewis and Charles Hannah. They practice cooperative economics by supporting community-based organizations. Michelle Lewis also offers vibrational sound therapy, Reiki, and other healing therapies at Third Eye Wholistic Wellness, located in front of the bookstore. August is Black Owned Business Month! We're proud to celebrate the diversity of our community, and we have a few recommendations to make too... One of our favorite black-owned businesses in Portland is @mimi’sfreshtees, Mimi's Fresh Tees PDX (mimisfreshteespdx.com). Owned by Kamelah Adams, a mother and designer who turned her personal experience with systemic racism into a clothing company dedicated to sparking conversations with clothing emblazoned with bold statements. When it’s time to figure out what’s for dinner, we recommend checking out iloveblackfood.com, a directory of Portland’s Black-Owned restaurants. Supporting local businesses supports a more vibrant community for all. #wellbeingforall

Air Quality Alert: While remembering to breathe in mindful way is usually a good idea, the more than 100 wildfires currently burning in the area makes that practice challenging right now. The Environmental Protection Agency offers a handy, user-friendly way to monitor air quality with its Air Now app: airnow.gov Managing the air quality inside your home can help. Keep windows and doors closed if you can, and avoid burning candles, fireplaces, or gas stoves. The Oregon Health Authority also recommends avoiding smoking, and avoiding vacuuming, both of which add more particulates to your air. #wellbeingforall
