Longwood Gardens is the legacy of Pierre S. du Pont, inspiring people through horticulture, education, and the arts.

About us

In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Throughout his life, Mr. du Pont indulged his passion for gardening, turning his farm into a magnificent horticultural showplace. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the great gardens of the world, encompassing 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, a 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ and a 4-acre grand Conservatory. Longwood continues the mission set forth by Mr. du Pont to bring joy and inspiration to everyone through the beauty of nature, conservation, and learning. Longwood Gardens offers a breadth of mission programming that includes exhibitions, musical performances by top artists, renowned horticulture education programs, horticulture research, environmental stewardship and cultural and community engagement.

  • Longwood Reimagined is our most ambitious undertaking in a century—and it should come as no surprise that many, many moving parts came into play when planning for and opening our new gardens, glasshouses, and landscapes. One such component was the multi-faceted (and multi-year) approach to creating the hundreds of plant display labels that had to be ready when we debuted our new spaces. This effort, led by our Plant Information and Mapping team, helps answer the simplest of questions—“what is that?”—but is by no means a simple process. Year-round, our Plant Information and Mapping team gathers, documents, and disseminates information about our plant collection and land to staff, students, volunteers, and guests. One aspect of our work is to create the plant display labels found throughout our Gardens. In an average year our team creates more than 4,000 display labels to place with plants that will be on display, from short-term seasonal displays in our Main Conservatory, to our long-term collections, such as trees. When the Longwood Reimagined project started, we knew that upon opening, hundreds of new display labels would have to be made and placed in time to welcome our first guests through the spaces. Find out how our team labeled Longwood Reimagined on our blog. https://lnkd.in/gxSjvZWa #PlantRecords #PlantLabels #PlantMapping #mapping #horticulture #BehindTheScenes #PlantIdentification #HorticulturalExhibits #PlantNames #CollectionsManagement

  • Engaging. Fast-paced. Far-reaching. Inspiring. Impactful. A day in the life of our Longwood Fellows is that, and much more. Throughout their unique garden leader-development program, our Fellows learn through interfacing with nonprofit leaders on challenges facing public horticulture, producing a cohort project that contributes to the leadership conversation occurring in public gardens, immersing in different Longwood Gardens departments, and much more. With such varied and vast elements of their program, no two days are the same for our Fellows, especially now as they prepare for their upcoming two-month individualized field placements at gardens throughout the world, including Gardens by the Bay (Singapore); Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (Richmond, England) Kew Gardens; Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh (Scotland); The Morton Arboretum (Lisle, Illinois); and The Alnwick Garden (Alnwick, England). Each of our five Fellows in the 2024–2025 cohort shares a standout day experienced thus far during their program journey—and what makes our Fellows Program so inspiring, on our blog, at https://lnkd.in/gD3r2mcn #fellows #longwoodgardens #longwood #garden #horticulture #LeaningOpportunity #PublicGardens #FIeldPlacement #LearningInTheField #LongwoodFellows
