Hispanic Heritage Month is here! Celebrated September 15 through October 15, this is an opportunity to honor the rich histories, diverse cultures and significant contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities, recognizing the vibrant traditions and lasting impact they’ve made across the United States. In honor of this special month, we'd like you to meet Austin Hernandez, Quality & Patient Safety Coordinator for Lovelace Medical Center. "My childhood was steeped in the vibrant tapestry of Mexican culture - a world of rich traditions, delectable cuisine and an unbreakable bond of family. Every few years, we embarked on an unforgettable pilgrimage to my mother's hometown, San Juan de los Lagos, a charming colonial town nestled in the heart of Jalisco, Mexico. Its cobblestone streets, lined with brightly painted buildings, led to the bustling central plaza, a vibrant hub of activity. One of the most memorable parts of our visits was the Basilica of the Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos. The sheer size of the basilica was awe-inspiring, and the atmosphere inside was filled with a sense of peace. Back at my mother's childhood home, we would spend hours catching up with relatives, and the kitchen was always the heart of the home, where my aunts and grandmother would prepare mouthwatering feasts. These trips were more than just vacations; they were a way to connect with my roots and understand the culture that shaped my identity. The warmth and love I experienced in San Juan de los Lagos instilled in me a deep appreciation for my Mexican heritage. Today, I continue to celebrate my culture through food, music, and traditions. But most importantly, I cherish the memories of those childhood journeys to San Juan de los Lagos, a place that will forever hold a special place in my heart." Thank you, Austin, for sharing what this month means to you! We would love to hear your stories of growing up with a culturally-rich, Hispanic experience. Post your photos and your favorite memory growing up or how you embrace your Hispanic heritage in the thread below!
