Meet Elijah Wangechi, Lovelace Women’s Hospital Emergency Department Charge Nurse. "My mum's struggles with mental health issues inspired me to be a nurse, I wanted to do better for her and people like her – the stigma and mistreatment of psychiatric patients especially in the Emergency Department setting. They deserve dignified care. The ED gives you everything, you see the results of your interventions in real-time, you change tears to smiles, bring back from despair to hope. The adrenaline rush. It's like living a dream." #EmergencyNursesWeek

Lovelace Health System is a proud sponsor of the Rio Grande Down Syndrome Network's annual Buddy Walk. The co-chair of the Buddy Walk is one of our VP of Human Resources', childhood best friends. Their daughters, Riley and Lucy, have also been BFFs since birth and are both now sophomores at La Cueva High School. Lucy walks every year in the Buddy Walk to support Riley, who also sang the national anthem onstage at this year's walk. October 6 - 12 is National Emergency Nurses Week and we will be featuring some of our front-line nursing staff all week long. Meet Sara McGuill, Lovelace Women’s Hospital Emergency Department Charge Nurse. "I was 14 years old in the doctor's office waiting to get my immunizations when the nurse came in with the syringes and needles, I knew that is what I wanted to do. I told her I wanted to give people shots when I grew up. She told me to go to nursing school . . . so I did! No one plans a trip to the Emergency Room but if you find yourself in a packed waiting room waiting, please know there are nurses working as hard and as fast as they can to get you taken care of as soon as possible. We do not like long wait times either but sometimes taking care of a really sick patient takes time.
