We envision a world where no child is denied the chance to learn.
About us
Our vision is of a world where no child is ever denied the chance to learn. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 9 in 10 children do not learn to read by age 10. Children who are out of primary school are uniquely challenged to develop vital foundational skills and keep up with educated peers over time. Our mission is to ensure all children have equal access to joyful, foundational learning, especially those shut out of education by crisis, poverty, or discrimination. To date, Luminos has enabled 277,787 out-of-school children to get a second chance to learn. Luminos currently operates classrooms in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East where students live in very challenging circumstances.

Thrilled to share the IDinsight RCT of our Luminos Fund Liberia program, now open access in Education Economics: https://lnkd.in/epc-7fMg. The study showed children in our program learn in just 1 year, 90% of what the average Liberian learns in their entire education! An amazing story of excellence, impact, and equity at scale. Excellence: "Children in the treatment group were able to read 4.5x as many words per minute and complete twice as many addition and subtraction problems at endline compared to children in the control group." Impact: "Treatment effects were between 0.5 SD and 2.1 SD for all reading and numeracy subtasks, and specifically were 1.6 SD for reading simple words and 0.6 SD for addition and subtraction." Equity: "Effects were similar in size for girls vs boys, younger vs older children, children who were previously enrolled in school vs dropouts, and children who started with lower baseline learning levels vs higher baseline learning levels."

In #Ethiopia, the government has adopted the Luminos model to reach out-of-school children nationwide. But what happens when structured pedagogy is introduced? A new evaluation shows students in these classrooms read nearly 4x as many words per minute compared to those without it. 📚📈 During the 2023-24 school year, Luminos and the Sidama Regional Education Bureau piloted a structured pedagogy approach to maximize learning outcomes in 40 government adoption classrooms in Sidama, reaching 1,500 out-of-school children. By the end of the program, students could read 32 correct words per minute (CWPM), an improvement of +28 CWPM at the start of the program, and their reading comprehension scores increased by 48 percentage points.
