At Porticus, we strive for a just and sustainable future where human dignity flourishes.
Over ons
Porticus is a philanthropic organisation that aims to create a just and sustainable future where human dignity flourishes. We recognise that not all people are able to live with dignity. Our work aims to strengthen the resilience of communities so that all people have ownership over their future and natural resources are used in a sustainable way. Our work is realized through strong networks of partners including local and global NGOs, communities, people with lived experience, policy makers and co-funders. We want systems to change in order to provide solutions to today’s social and environmental problems that benefit generations to come in four areas: the natural environment, societies, education and faith. Our work is led by the strategies of four priorities; Strengthening our Societies – making sure all people have agency and the opportunity to contribute Building Future Generations – strengthening social and emotional learning, especially for children in extreme adversity Caring for the Earth – ensuring a fair transition to a sustainable future Fostering Vital Faith Communities – fostering faith as a source of strength, particularly in Catholic communities In addition, through our special entities Argidius and Community Arts Lab, we work on tackling poverty through strengthening the ecosystem for small business and stimulating social movements through arts.

At Porticus, we believe Regenerative Agriculture is the most effective way to promote a fair transition to sustainable food systems. It can more sustainably feed and employ a growing world population and give agency and dignity to the billions worldwide who depend on small-scale farming for food and jobs. Teachers play a vital role in their students’ lives, inspiring and supporting their growth beyond the traditional classroom skills. This support is even more crucial for children who experience trauma and extreme insecurity, such as those growing up in refugee camps. At Porticus, we want learners to be supported to build resilience and socio-emotional skills as a key enabler for them to develop to their full potential. This is why we support refugee-led organisations to develop young people’s social and emotional learning (SEL). Find out more about how teachers and Refugee Led Organisations are helping young students develop their full potential in Kakuma by watching this video. Our partner Global Commons Alliance shares their highlights from #ClimateWeekNYC.
🗽We're home! Here are some of our highlights from #ClimateWeekNYC and the UN Summit of the Future. 👇 At the start of the week, the Earth Commission co-hosted a high-level roundtable with Earth4All, PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Planetary Guardians, Future Earth, The Earth League and the International Science Council to address the links between planetary stability, inequality, justice and human well-being. 🌎 This was followed by the unveiling of the inaugural #PlanetaryHealthCheck, a first-of-its-kind scientific tool and report on the health of the Planet. #EarthHQ, in partnership with PIK and the Planetary Guardians, helped to build and host the online presence of the Planetary Health Check. The reports, which will be published annually, support collective efforts to understand and protect the stability and resilience of Earth. 📊🌡️ #SystemsChangeLab, Bezos Earth Fund and World Resources Institute organized a session on driving food systems transformation, including sharing a glimpse of the new indicators on food and agriculture that will be launching on the data platform soon. Experts discussed how companies, NGOs, and investors can work together to break down silos and develop food and agricultural solutions within and across sectors. 🍏🚜 “Actions you take in the food system today actually impact the climate tomorrow,” said event moderator Andy Jarvis, Director of Future of Food, the Bezos Earth Fund. Sustainability leaders gathered to hear insights from companies who piloted the first science-based targets for nature at an event organized by the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and co-hosted by the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), which shared key outcomes from the pilot. 🎯 In her closing remarks, Erin Billman, Executive Director, the SBTN, highlighted the significance of this milestone for corporate target setting, stating that companies now have a “vetted” proof of concept for credible action on nature. However, she acknowledged the complexity of the task, remarking: “If it were easy, we’d be reinforcing the status quo.” Hosted by New Zero World, Earth HQ and H&M Foundation, the Earth Public Information Collaborative (EPIC) held a special event to share the ‘Most important brief’, which aims to engage media agencies and the public to build Earth-centric campaigns and content that will drive wide scale behavioral change. The final event of the week for the GCA was co-hosted with ClientEarth at an iconic venue in New York, the art auction house Christie's, about the latest innovations in law and science to protect all life on Earth. 👉 Read a full events summary and explore our photo galleries: https://lnkd.in/eG_7x5PD GCA Accountability Accelerator Science Based Targets Network (SBTN)

Take a read of the new Global Commons Alliance safe & just earth systems boundaries report recently published in the Lancet. I like 🌍 Jonah Belitz’s summary, so I’m simply reposting! Porticus and the Purposeful Business team are incredibly proud of the Earth Commission, seed funding this work back in 2018 with Oak Foundation and André Hoffmann & Global Environment Facility. Science needs the action agenda to be fully funded too - which the wider Global Commons Alliance components are working on with Science Based Targets Network, Global Commons Accountability Accelerator, Earth HQ and Systems Change Lab. 5 component are in the Global Commons Alliance helping to drive this critical science into how business, media, industry, and key systems act and deliver messages. 👇🏼 You won’t find a better paper condensing what SUSTAINABILITY is about than this 🌍 A new report co-authored by 60+ natural and social scientists from the Earth Commission - quantifies safe and just Earth-System boundaries (ESBs) - assesses minimum access to natural resources required for wellbeing - discusses ways to translate ESBs into targets for businesses and cities 🎯 The authors also propose a set of 4 system transformations for a sustainable and just future (examples of specific actions) 1️⃣ CONSUMPTION: restrict luxury and wasteful consumption among high-income consumers and enable access to services satisfying basic needs for all 2️⃣ ECONOMIC SYSTEMS: internalize externalities in resource prices, adopt new indicators for economic performance, mandate decent working conditions, “monitor and control investment, subsidies, and trade” 3️⃣ TECHNOLOGY: scale sustainable technology (e.g. through subsidies) and adopt the precautionary principle to minimize harm 4️⃣ GOVERNANCE: reform the UN (set up Earth governance regulatory body, reform the Security Council, establish solidarity pact), remove money from politics, boost minority representation, decentralize decision making, advance debt relief and tax justice, … ❗What really stands out is that tackling INEQUALITY is necessary condition for bringing humanity back in tune with the planet and should be a policy priority ✅ This aligns with the work of Earth4All, which suggests that maintaining social cohesion through tackling inequality and poverty is instrumental in driving energy and food system transformations, and of the International Resource Panel (IRP) in its latest Global Resources Outlook 2024 ▶️ Link to the report: https://lnkd.in/ez5TXsk2 ▶️ Link to the explainer brief: https://lnkd.in/ee5Z62bd 💬 More info and background in the comment section #sustainability #environment #circulareconomy #climate
