Last night, Council adopted proclamations for Veterans Day and First Responders Day. Council Member Decker began presenting the Veterans Day proclamation by reading "In Flanders Field." Dennis Gibb from Edmonds College Veterans Resource Center, Mary from the Heroes Café Board, and the veterans in the audience were in attendance to accept the proclamation. Council Member Parshall presented the First Responders Day proclamation, which was accepted by numerous first responders from our local agencies, including: South County Fire: Assistant Chief Todd Anderson and Deputy Fire Marshall Alex Jenness; Sno911: Kim Crannell and Kellie Daigle; Lynnwood Police Department: Commander Brian Jorgensen; Lynnwood Public Works: Director Bill Franz, Deputy Director Jared Bond, Street Maintenance Supervisor Rus Kroshko, Utilities Supervisor Nick Stokes.

Congrats to the Lynnwood University Class of 2024! Earlier this month, our latest cohort of Lynnwood University students “graduated.” Our students spent five weeks learning from our employees how our city operates. One of our students this year was Trudy Dana, a longtime former city employee of the Police Department. Along with former Council Member Loren Simmonds, Trudy founded the first Lynnwood University! We offer the Lynnwood University every fall, so be sure to follow us on social media when the course opens for registration next year!

Today, we are celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day. We acknowledge that the City of Lynnwood is located on the traditional lands of the Snohomish Tribe and the confederation of Tulalip Tribes and their families. For generations, these Indigenous communities have lived on this land, and we recognize, support, and advocate alongside them. We also acknowledge the forced removal of Indigenous communities from their Homelands as a result of the 1855 Treaty of Point Elliott. We understand that Land Acknowledgements are only the first step in our efforts to support Coast Salish tribes and educate non-Natives about their lived history. We strive to achieve this through building relationships with Indigenous communities, supporting Indigenous commerce, government-to-government partnerships, and lifting Indigenous voices to create equity for all. Through these actions, we hope to not only pay respect to the past but also collaborate in creating a sustainable future, hand in hand with the first protectors of our shared environment.

Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department likes to honor its staff, participants, and programs with what they call an “Extraordinary Report.” Today, they recognized our Aquatics Assistant Supervisor, Rebecca. She is EXTRAORDINARY! With 18 years in the Aquatics department, Rebecca has risen through the ranks to her current role. What sets her apart is her innovative approach to engaging and retaining part-time staff. Rebecca has introduced a “house” system for new team members—similar to the houses in Harry Potter—which fosters a sense of belonging and community. Each new staff member is paired with housemates and a leader who can guide them through their onboarding process. Additionally, she has implemented fun training games, currently Wheel of Fortune, to reinforce training skills in an enjoyable way. Rebecca will present in October at the World Waterpark Conference on “Employee Engagement and Incentives on a Budget.” Rebecca’s creativity has created a supportive and encouraging culture within our aquatics staff. Rebecca is EXTRAORDINARY!
