BUG OUT 🦋🐞🐛 At the intersection of art and science live some of the most maligned and misunderstood creatures on the planet: bugs. By which we mean insects and other arthropods like spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites, centipedes, millipedes — all those creepy-crawlies in the tall grass and loamy marshes. While many see insects as pests, they are critical to the survival of the very humans they purportedly bother. We need bugs, and the more you learn about them, the more astonishingly vital — and impressive — they seem. Join us as we celebrate Wisconsin’s tiniest creatures. 🖊️ Maggie Ginsberg and Anna Kottakis Also in this issue, when Madisonians want their voices heard on issues — like war, policy, civil rights, labor conditions and racism — many have marched the streets, staged sit-ins and raised their picket signs in protest. Stu Levitan outlines 19 notable demonstrations in Madison’s history of protest from 1960 to now. Plus, Jeff Oloizia ponders Madison’s signature dish, Alisyn Amant finds grounding in Aaron Laux Design's creative process and Emma Waldinger explores the culinary potential of the bugs. What makes a supper club a supper club? Those familiar with the restaurant genre our state is famous for know the experience is revered but also protected and widely debated. We created a poll with 28 suggested supper club essentials and asked respondents to check all that applied. More than a thousand people chimed in. The respondents (the majority of whom are presumably Wisconsinites) offered 135 requirements for a restaurant to be considered a true Wisconsin supper club. Editor-in-chief Andrea Behling digs into every single one. 🥃 Also in the March issue, Emma Waldinger offers a season-by-season guide to developing a stronger sense of place among the Madison area’s unique ecology and natural environment. From our weather patterns, wildlife, flora and fauna, wetlands, prairies, forests, food and the issues exclusively affecting Dane County’s natural resources, there is so much to learn about right here. Engage with this list of local activities, events, resources and organizations to become a better citizen of the land, right here in Madison. 🪺 Plus, the results for Best Places to Work are in. These are the top workplaces in Madison based on an employee survey conducted by a third party and hosted by Madison Magazine. In the March issue, we recognized the 20 local businesses that scored highest. Single issue orders are now live at madisonmagazine.com.
