  • Less than a year after a serious car accident left her with brain trauma, 16-year-old Grace Pauley is excited to start her junior year of high school today! While she worked to regain her abilities to walk and talk in therapy, Grace also kept up with her schoolwork through Madonna’s Therapeutic Learning Center. Now, she’s ready to get back to her friends, classes, and even homework! “I’m grateful to make it to this day,” Grace said. “It took a lot of hard work! Thank you for all the love and support!” We love seeing photos of former patients heading back to school. You can email your photos to marketingandpr@madonna.org!

  • Janina Chapin goes above and beyond helping patients she cares for breathe easier. For those reasons and more, Janina, a respiration therapist on Madonna’s Ventilator Assisted/Special Needs Unit (VAU/SN), is the 2024 recipient of the Nicholas Liechti Caregiver Award. Since starting at Madonna in 2008, Janina has always strived to do more on behalf of her patients. Her nomination reads in part: “Janina goes way above her role as a respiration therapist. She is constantly cutting hair, taking [people] on outings, making sure patients get outside when possible … She in my opinion is the most patient-focused employee we have and is greatly deserving of this award.” The Nicholas Liechti Caregiver Award is presented annually to a VAU/SN unit caregiver who goes above and beyond in providing extraordinary care while making patients feel special. Karen McGivney-Liechti recalled the extraordinary care her son, Nicholas, received for many years as a VAU/SN unit resident. Following his death on September 22, 2011, Karen and her family established the caregiver award. It’s presented to honor his memory and as a way to give back to the outstanding staff who cared for Nicholas over the years.

Hats off to the class of 2024 Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Residency Program. We’re proud of the accomplishments made by our four graduating residents these past four years. The PM&R program is in partnership with the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Omaha Campus serves as the primary training hospital for residents. Join us in celebrating their achievements, next steps and the impact Madonna has had on their residency. Plus, we introduce you to the incoming PRM&R residents who’ve recently started their journeys. The 2024 PM&R Residency program graduates include (L-R): Justin Comer, M.D.; Anna Woods, D.O., and chief resident; Gabrielle Jonswold, D.O.; and Eric Jonswold, D.O. PM&R first-year residents include (L-R): Simran Singh, M.D.; Rotem Hass, M.D.; Nathaniel Albrecht, M.D.; and Thomas Kleckner, M.D. The PM&R program is in partnership with the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and its clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine. Samuel Bierner, M.D., serves as professor and department chair and is the Madonna Rehabilitation medical director for the Omaha Campus. Michael Weaver, D.O., is the program director. The program recently received its reaccreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). In addition, our brain injury medicine fellowship also has approval for two fellows, and we will interview applicants later this summer for the next academic year. The only PM&R program in Nebraska, it’s also the first of its kind in a five-state upper Midwest region, with Madonna’s Omaha Campus serving as the primary training hospital for all 16 residents working with patients, both adults and kids, recovering from stroke, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and other complex medical issues. Graduate physiatrists include: Justin Comer, M.D.; Anna Woods, D.O., and chief resident; Gabrielle Jonswold, D.O.; and Eric Jonswold, D.O. The past four years, resident physicians have worked hard to develop skills, forge friendships and build and raise families, all while working with care teams to help restore patients recovering from illness or injury.
