📚 Important new research on reading interventions reveals a critical gap: Many older students lack critical foundational reading skills and fall below the "decoding threshold," limiting how far they can progress in their reading abilities as texts become more complex. As Rebecca Sutherland, Associate Director of Research at our sister organization Reading Reimagined notes: "We don't test students' foundational literacy skills after 3rd grade as a rule, unless they've been flagged as needing to have special attention." This comprehensive study from ETS and AERDF examined reading growth of 17,000 students in grades 5-9, finding that students below the decoding threshold showed significantly slower progress in critical reading subskills over time. This research underscores the urgent need to identify and support older students who still struggle with foundational reading skills. It's time to reimagine how we approach literacy intervention and that is what we are doing here at Magpie Literacy - using emerging research to build a comprehensive solution to end illiteracy. This critical research from our sister organization, Reading Reimagined, an Inclusive Research and Development program of Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF) informs the development of our comprehensive literacy solution at Magpie Literacy.
Every student deserves to become a confident reader, but older students often struggle with grade-level texts. As of 2022, National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data–often called “the nation’s report card”–has shown nearly 70% of 4th grade and 8th grade students are not proficient readers. A new study from Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF) and ETS offers critical insights into why older students are struggling to read: the “decoding threshold.” The decoding threshold is a critical level of decoding skill needed to read and understand grade-level text. The report, "The Decoding Threshold: Measuring the Roots of Older Students' Reading Difficulties: New Evidence," reconfirms the urgent need for resources that target foundational literacy skills in grades 3 and up. 🎉We are thrilled to announce that Magpie Literacy is of 10 organizations to receive a $150,000 grant from The Learning Accelerator (TLA) as part of their new Exponential Learning Initiative. “Magpie is on a multiyear journey to unlock the great reader in all students through the creation of our nation’s first K-8 comprehensive, research-backed digital literacy platform,” says Leo Bialis-White, Chief Strategy Officer, Magpie Literacy. “This year, alongside TLA and a cohort of innovators, we are taking a meaningful leap toward that vision by bolstering scale and efficacy efforts to launch truly instructionally precise tools that align to the needs of K-12 classrooms across the country.” 🔎We're honored to join this impressive cohort of education innovators. Together with TLA and research partner Mathematica, we'll be working to advance adoption and develop evidence at scale of hybrid and virtual learning strategies with demonstrated early-stage impact during the 2024-25 school year.

We are pleased to amplify the results of a new study from RAND and our sister organization Reading Reimagined, a program of the Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF). The study highlights the urgent need for older students to receive instruction on foundational literacy skills and the need to provide educators with more tools to address students' reading challenges. Our team at Magpie Literacy is building a comprehensive digital solution to address these needs.
A new study from RAND and Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF) reveals nearly 75% of educators in grades 3–8 feel that they lack the tools to address their students’ reading challenges. The study confirms what those of us in education have seen firsthand: older learners need help with basic reading skills, too. AERDF’s Reading Reimagined program is pioneering evidence-based solutions to meet these needs by applying Advanced Inclusive R&D to develop practical tools to support both teachers and students at all ages and stages of learning—because we know it’s never too late to unlock the greater reader in every child. 📣 🤝 🎉 Magpie ROAR Partnership & Integration Magpie Literacy has finalized a long-term partnership with Jason Yeatman and the team at Stanford University’s Rapid Online Assessment of Reading (ROAR) to integrate their innovative assessment into Magpie’s platform. Students using our tools this school year will take the ROAR as part of their learning experience, just as if they were playing one of our learning games. The assessment will provide essential data about students’ precise learning needs. "There are many educational technology products that claim to be grounded in science,” notes Yeatman, “but there is no one else that I know that is taking such a rigorous approach to research and development. [Magpie’s] approach goes beyond ‘validation’ to continually learn how to build better programs for the diversity of learners in the US." Let us know if you're interested to learn more!
