Maine Supreme Judicial Court Justice Catherine Connors is facing disciplinary proceedings, a first for a sitting Maine high court justice, because she did not recuse herself from two foreclosure appeals before the court. This is the first time the Committee on Judicial Conduct has recommended discipline against a judge on the Supreme Court. Now, Maine’s highest court must decide how to judge one of its own members, with history and Maine law offering little guidance. More helpful reporting to inform Maine voters about the 2024 election!

Congratulations to The Maine Monitor/Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting team! Fantastic work. And Congratulations to our founders, Naomi Schalit and John Christie, on their induction into the Hall of Fame!

Understanding how our votes are counted is critical to trusting the process and our democratic institutions. This week, Emily Bader dug into the data and found that a third of Maine's jurisdictions — representing nearly 40,000 registered voters — still count ballots by hand. This, as one might imagine, is not the fastest process. And studies have shown it to have higher error rates than electronic scanners — though Emily explores how there are safeguards in place. You can read more in Emily's story, as well as explore our interactive map, which lets you search by town to find out what tabulation method is used, how many registered voters there are, and more. 

Over the weekend, The Maine Monitor received 11 awards from the Maine Press Association! Plus, John Christie and Naomi Schalit, co-founders of the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, were formally inducted into the MPA Hall of Fame.
