About us

Making Cents International is a results-driven development consulting firm founded on the principles of social entrepreneurship. We work with partner organizations to build their capacity to support the people they serve—from the smallholder farmers who feed the planet to the young leaders and entrepreneurs who shape our communities. Our public- and private-sector clients benefit from our expertise and our broad industry exposure. Our work has taken us to 60 countries. We have supported partners in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas in their efforts to achieve positive change in a range of sectors. Our tailored curricula and technical assistance provide young leaders with the skills to be more effective; assist electronic payments companies to deliver financial advice via mobile phones to new customers; and support agricultural extension agents in helping poor farmers turn their subsistence farms into profitable businesses. We have also become a leading knowledge management provider through our demand-driven Knowledge Management platform that supports a growing global network of donors, multinational companies, and NGOs. More than 5,000 members use this platform to access concrete and transferable information to inform the design, implementation, and evaluation of high-impact youth economic opportunity programs, policies, and partnerships. Our annual Global Youth Economic Opportunities Summit is the “go to” event in this space, and our online learning hub offers a wide array of tools and resources to members year-round. The Summit also convenes private-sector leaders who are committed to using a “shared value” approach to address youth unemployment globally. We invite you to join our stakeholder network and benefit from these resources. Making Cents is looking to work with clients and partners who seek real and lasting change in the lives of the people they serve. If this sounds like you, please be in touch.

  • That’s a wrap for the 2024 #GYEOSummit. Thank you to all our sponsors, speakers, and attendees for making the summit a success! We were happy to see so many new faces along with those who have attended our summit over the years. Today started with a headline address from Ragina Arrington, CEO of Clinton Global Initiative University, who spoke to the importance of treating youth as equals. We then transitioned to a plenary session hosted by Catholic Relief Services which included a panel featuring Bayron Cazún of RainDrop Restoration Services (El Salvador), Femi Oye of SMEFunds (Nigeria), and Michelle Wilson of WasteAid UK. Young entrepreneurs are innovating regenerative agriculture, renewable energy, and waste repurposing to combat climate change and improve livelihoods globally. Today’s sessions focused on the theme, Emerging Innovations. Speakers shared updates on various projects and initiatives within their organizations. Highlights included new technology for monitoring farms and forests and strategies for creating jobs at scale. One session also had a special message for employers: focus on upskilling your current employees, not just looking for new talent. The day concluded with a closing plenary from young refugees and representatives from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Building Markets, and WUSC. The closing plenary, Catalyzing Youth Economic Opportunities With and For Refugees, explored strategies and programs to improve economic opportunities for young refugees, addressing barriers like restrictive policies, limited skills development, and inadequate financial access. We hope participants will continue the conversation on youth driving the #GreenEconomy. Keep in touch with your new connections and we can’t wait to see how the industry drives sustainable business forward in the next few years.

  • On the UN Day for #SouthSouthCooperation, we celebrate the power of collaboration in the global south. Making Cents works to promote opportunities for people around the world. In #Guyana, #StLucia, and #Grenada, we are training social services government officials to adopt and apply #PYD practices and a trauma-informed approach to better serve youth at risk of engagement in crime and violence. In Grenada, we are training government officials to implement a standardized case management approach when serving at-risk #youth and their families within the social services sector. In #Ukraine, we are supporting the Ukrainian Business Support Organization to engage with youth #entrepreneurs to sustain and expand their enterprises in a war-time economy. • Day 2 of the #GYEOSummit has concluded. The day started with a discussion on intergenerational action for climate solutions and green job creation. Headline speaker Amara Ifeji noted that while youth will inherit the climate issue, everyone has a role to play in the solution. The Intergenerational Plenary continued the conversation, with Cecilia Martinez from the Bezos Earth Fund stressing the importance of integrating justice and youth in all climate efforts. Ann Vaughan from USAID expressed the need to include youth and gender to ensure inclusivity in all projects. Breakout sessions encouraged participants to reconsider #GreenSkills as encompassing the abilities they already have across various industries. Industry experts weren’t the only ones leading sessions, today #youth were truly at the forefront. A session run by Ukrainian youth entrepreneurs on the #UNITY Activity spoke to why they started their businesses and how they operate during a war. Several of the young professionals from the youth leadership accelerator had the opportunity to host sessions, applying the skills they gained during the training. The day closed with a private sector plenary, bringing together sustainability experts working to help companies set and achieve climate goals. They incorporated today’s underlying theme of recognizing green skills across all industries and emphasized the importance of this perspective. Participants were left pondering a just transition and the next steps to get there.

      +1
  • Day 1 of the #GYEOSummit was full of great learnings and great engagement. Speakers and participants alike engaged in knowledge sharing. Starting with the conclusion of the Youth Leadership Accelerator, where the young participants heard from a panel of career experts who answered industry questions. The Pre-summit trainings included a hands-on session on holistic economic programming, grounded in youth perspectives by asking participants to reflect on their own experiences and another introducing participants to the upcoming USAID YP2LE MERL Toolkit. Sponsor-led lunches offered spark talks on important programs and findings. The beat of world music drummers called participants to the opening session of Summit led by EDC on building toward a youth-inclusive green economy. The concurrent breakout sessions dove further into industry topics, with filled rooms around every corner. Laughter, networking, and notetaking were key to the day. All culminating in a headline address by USAID Agency Lead Economist, Dean Karlan, followed by a USAID plenary on UDL. The networking reception and poster session offered one last chance for participants to gather, all while enjoying a live DJ. We can’t wait to see everyone tomorrow!
